BMCC Exposing to the Right in Prores

PostThu Oct 03, 2013 3:46 pm

Just curious if the ETTR techniques that people use in RAW should be used in Prores mode on the Cinema Camera? I'm getting great results just exposing normally in both formats. Really haven't fully grasped this concept yet.

Hi Joe,
yes of course you should ETTR, but it's probably safer to put your zebras to 90% percent. Personally I don't do it, but it's been reported by some of the users here to be the safer way.
Happy shooting!

Cheers,

Interesting about 90%. I think that might be a little on the low side.

Personally I wondered if 100% were enough. I haven't checked yet but I thought, if BMPCC is like other cameras I've used, clipping hits the wall at about 109%. Granted other camera zebras also max at 100% I'd rather have more room to pull back in grading. I vaguely remember reading that part of the issue with zebras is that they can be +/- 10% depending on approach (opening or closing iris to the point where the first appear/disappear) Maybe I'm mistaken. I'd love for someone to clarify.
