Blackmagic Cinema Camera images on the big screen

PostThu Oct 10, 2013 11:21 pm

Hi Everyone

My curiosity got the better of me. I’d been wondering since getting my hands on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera if it were truly good enough for cinema. I was well aware of the advantages of shooting RAW, love the look of the images the Blackmagic Cinema Camera produces, but what would they look like on the big screen?

It took a bit of organising - I come armed to the cinema with a laptop and DVI adapter. The cinema is letting me do the tests, they suggested plugging the laptop straight in or using BluRay (I’ve brought 2 red laser BluRay discs with me.) The other option is a 2K DCP file - that’s not something I know how to create.

We plug the laptop straight in. The projector is a monster. I’m not going to give model numbers or specs, let’s just say it’s as big as a small car. From the booth I can see the images on the big screen.

Yes u r right. I also have checked the quality of BMCC and there are no issues of picture quality if projected on big screen. Even 720p is more than sufficien. Here in India one of the biggest gaint in film distribution using 720p material for final film distribution and there r no quality issues.

I was yesterday on premiere that i worked with as consulting colorist.
It was all shot alexa but sitting there and seeing all the images i saw no reason
why my BMC would not hold up in cinema.

Make good DCP and test it out.

I'm not surprised it looks good. The files out of both the BMCC and BMPCC all have great colour depth and resolution.

The 2K DCP file would look much better. The footage you watched via DVI was all 8bit (that is all that is supported via DVI on your MacBook).

2K DCP is 12bit. To the transitions and graduations of colour are much much smoother.

I have seen that many times with clients projects in their suite vs cinema DCP of the same material.

Mostly you see so much more details and details in to shadows.
