"NO SSD"

PostSat Nov 23, 2013 12:11 am

Hi
I got this message on my camera last night "NO SSD" when I was setting up a shot.
I checked the SSD in docking station I have on my PC computer and it saw the drive and recognized the apple format.
I transferred a file onto the empty SSD and put it back in the camera
again I got the "NO SSD" where it should have read "READY".
I took the SSD back to the dock and reformatted it
When it went back in the camera the camera recognized the SSD and I got the READY prompt.
My SSD is a discontinued OCZ 240GB Vertex 3 (VTX3-25SAT3-240G) which has always worked fine
My search of the forum for the term "NO SSD" yielded about 2,500 hits, so I would have to guess one of those is a similar problem but I did not find it there, its a problem I have found with most forum search engines not unique to the BMCC forum.
I would like to know if this is a common problem as I usually just delete clips off the SSD and do not bother to reformat every time. usually when I go out to shoot I do not take a computer but use a public one to transfer files into my external storage drive. I do not travel with a laptop.
Any comments on procedure or similar problems would be helpful in anticipating a future problem.

I usually find this is a problem when your SSD is not on the supported list. I've also always favored the Sandisk Extreme 240GB drives (v1 not v2), as they seem the most reliable. The "NO SSD" warning has always popped up when the drive isn't on the list.

I'd also recommend that after dumping footage, either do a format, or erase the footage and EMPTY THE TRASH. I don't always format the drives but I don't let more than 5 "footage dumps" pass without a format. That might be excessive, and I've read John Brawley say he does it after every 10 dumps, but it just makes me feel better doing it more often than not.

OCZ drives have been reported to fail more often than others, so if you can, I'd switch away. It'll work until one day it doesn't, and then the results could be catastrophic.

If you don't eject the SSD properly using 'safely remove hardware' you might have that problem, whether you just formatted or not. Not sure if that was the cause of your troubles, but that seems to be the root cause for 99.9% of the instances of the camera not recognizing an SSD.

thank you Mark and Paul
I have been slack about that how I disconect, I will change.
Paul the OCZ was approved till it was discontinued and I never had any problems, I have had bad experiences with SanDisk. there is nothing on the approved list made by OCZ now but there are some great deals on residual inventory of this brand.
It would be interesting to get some input on others using OCZ without problems
thanks both of you
