Best mic for BMCC

PostSun Nov 24, 2013 10:31 pm

What mic is the best bang for bucks out there, in your opinion?
Are there fex any good ones that goes directly into the BMCC ports without any adaptors?

What does
fex
mean?

You might wanna try the Rode Stereo Video Mic Pro, it has a guess 20dB-boost and that's sufficient for in-camera-recording w/o a preamp if you're willing to adjust the audio-levles in post.
But you're really quite near the BMC's fan with that one, but in a really quiet room even a shotgun positioned on the BMC itsself will pick up the noise: the Shure Lenshopper picked up more though than the Rode NTG-2.
Even the Rode NTG-2 does give me enough level directly into the BMC if I'm willing to boost the level in post, which turns it into a atmo/b-roll-solution but as I'm recording critical audio on an extra device anyway that is okay with me. The Shure 83f Lenshopper does give a boost-mode as well and delivers better levels than the Rode NTG2, both are shotguns.

But I can't recall any post here or on BMCuser where someone used a mic plugged into the BMC directly and got as good results as with a preamp or external solution.
So if others chime in and proove me wrong on that I'll happily go the same route then for easy audio.

Fex=short for, for example ;)

I actually got a Rode Videomic, tested it with an adapter from 2.5 to 1/4 but it doesnt pick up anything, ive read somewhere that the adapter needs to be a mono plug, but then again, i also hear the sound is poor, so i guess i have to get a new one anyway...

How about stuff like this?
Doesnt seem to cost a fortune...

Which Rode Videomic exactly do you have? There's lots of varieties of them with very similiar names,
like Videomic, Videomic Pro, Stereo Videomic, Stereo Videomic Pro and they behave different on the BMC.

Haven't read anything about that beachtek-thing, but juicedlink make a dedicated BMC-preamp and if I ever gonna buy something like that, then this as it's quite versatile and has a good reputation soundwise, although a bit more expensive than the beachtek, but three times the features and half the size (still, beachtek have the better webdesigner  ):

Funny you should ask that, it only says Videomic on the box, Directional Video Condenser Microphone, i think its the mono vers.

Yea, that juiced link thing looks like (compared to the camera) "hey, look what i found in my drawer from '94

Is this a good product for the BMCC, considering its optional accessories?

Search thois forum, there is a thread about the Zoom H6 and the BMC - for external audio it would be my choice if I had not already a Sony PCM D50.

I use firmware 1.2 on my BMCC and use a Sennheisser ME66 microphone and a passive Beachtek adaptor. Then fix the DC offset in post. Can't complain, sounds really good to me.

I've got the stereo video mic pro with 20 db boost. We boom it as close as possible using a rode boom pole and cable. While it's supposed to be just general noise and/or sync sound, it's quite usable.

About the fan noise, is it necessary to have a fan cooling at that speed? Wouldnt a lighter one be enough unless your at the highest summer temps?
For Mac user, we have something called fan control, and i assume the fan speed if nothing else could be adjusted trough firmware.
I would also imagine a lower fan speed would give better battery performance.
How about a summer/winter setting in the menu for this?

gr8phics,

I use an Audio Technica AT897 and firmware 1.2. The mic needs a AA battery for power. Works fantastic if you're not riding the levels. No need for any other power source. Keep your audio level input around 69%.

If you use any other firmware than 1.2, you'll have to use a level booster.

Hey guys.

Can you tell me the best way of using microphone on BMCC with out external recorder? Like is there a way of using Rode Videomic directly to the camera?

Thanks
