FCP (7 and X) plugins for BMC log footage

PostSat Oct 13, 2012 12:36 am

People who know my FCP7 plugin for Alexa LogC (and those who don't) may be interested to know that I have a new version of the plugin for ProRes footage recorded in Blackmagic Film mode which I hope to release shortly.

UPDATE: The plugin is now released, and an FCP-X version is in beta

Are you planning anything for CS6 (on Windows)?

FCP 7 is great but Apple is dropping support so would gladly pay for X version.

Writing a plugin for FCP-X (or Premiere or Avid) is much more involved than the FXScript plugins I have for FCP 7. I am investigating all the options for the future, but the FCP 7 version is the one I have working now.

Any people who already have cameras and want to test the plugin, let me know.

I have delayed the release of my FCP7 LUT plugin for the Blackmagic camera while I wait for more detailed information on the camera's colour science. In the mean time I have decided to make a demo version with my own approximation of the camera's colour processing available for people to test.

If anybody is interested in getting the pre-release demo version of the plugin, send an email to bmccplugin[at]antlerpost[dot]com with "demo" in the subject line, and who you are and how you hope to use the plugin in the body of the message.

...and the plugin is released

Work with Blackmagic Film ProRes files in the FCP7 timeline, seeing them in "video" like the camera's monitoring. No need to render if you enable "Unlimited RT" – set high/medium/low quality depending on the speed of your machine. Or batch export with the LUT (and burn-ins if required) "baked in" to proxy files for editorial.

Demo version also available to download.

Hi Nick: Congrats on shipping your new plugin. I'm likely to purchase it as soon as my BMCC arrives (when it arrives ...) since I plan to shoot a lot of ProRes and I use FCP7. Cheers!

I am working on ways of porting my plugin to FCP-X and Premiere. I currently have a LUT implementation working in FCP-X. In its current form it is not something I can distribute, as IP which is not mine to reveal would be visible, but I'm working on it.

OK. I'm looking for a small group of beta testers for an FCP-X version of the plugin.

Please email nick [at] antlerpost [dot] com if you have a BMCC, use FCP-X and would like to join the beta programme. Give me a brief paragraph on why you are a suitable beta tester.

Sent.

Out of curiousity, are you using the BMD Film-To-Rec709 LUT found in Resolve to help build it?

Making good progress with the FCP-X version of the plugin. Huge thanks to Adam Roberts who came over with his camera today to do some testing.

The plugin includes adjustments for Exposure and white-balance.

Hi Nick: I just downloaded the free trial version of your plugin for FCP7. Does (or will) the $30 version include the exposure & WB adjustments in FCP7, too? Cheers.

If you're still looking for testers - I just got my BMCC and am very interested in the plug-in. Let me know if I can help.

The FCP-X plugin is a complete re-write from scratch, and also processes in floating point. This means it can do stuff which the 8-bit FCP7 plugin cannot. So no, the FCP7 version does not currently have the adjustments available in the FCP-X version. The FXP-X version does not have the burn-ins available in the FCP7 version, as FCP-X does not pass timecode meta-data to plugins.

The intent of the FCP7 version is for dailies and editorial, whereas the FCP-X version can be used for finishing. If there is demand, I may look at the possibilities of porting the developments from the FCP-X version into a new FCP7 plugin. But for now it is identical to the demo in terms of functionality.

Thanks for the offer. I have enough testers for the moment.

Thanks for the follow-up, Nick. Makes sense.

Question: Are FCP7 plugins limited to 8-bit?

Not all of them, but many of the built in effects are 8-bit only. The user guide does tell you which (if you look hard enough!)

Some functions which my plugins use are limited to 8-bit. But I do have a potential work around.

I spent some time with Nick this afternoon testing the beta version of the FCPX plugin. We tested both studio tungsten balanced footage and some daylight footage. Nick has done a great job and it's coming along nicely. I'd say it's getting closer to a release version.

I'll put together a detailed blog post this weekend with some sample footage.

I can see this being a really useful plugin for those shooting ProRes on fast turn around jobs where you don't have time/budget to spend days grading footage.

Some of the extra tools Nick has included, like the tint and colour balance sliders, will be really useful at getting more out of the ProRes footage. We shot test footage in both Video and Film mode so we could compare the two after applying the plugin to the Film "log" footage. Having seen the results I'd rather shoot ProRes film and use this plugin than shoot ProRes Video as there is some much more info in film "log" footage and you have much more control over the final out come.

I'll post a link to the blog post once it's up.
