Captain Hook: give us an official look LUT!

PostPosted: Mon May 29, 2023 8:31 pm

Dear Hook (and BMD),

you've done great work on the recent color generations but I personally would love an official 'look' LUT from you!

The one thing I like about Kinefinity is that their official LUT makes the footage ready to go straight to cinema.

I know with BMD color gens, Hook is bound to make a neutral starting point, but I also know how great his personal look LUTs for BMD cameras have been before joining BMD.

So please BMD, with three cherries on top...let Hook give us a (or even several) official Look LUT for your cameras!

UPDATE:

I guess he delivered with something much better than a LUT.

Thanks for the Film Look Creator tool, Hook!

What’s wrong with “Extended” ?

I find it’s an EXCELLENT look right out of the camera. Everyone seems to forget it and use video.
And made by hook too.

I generally use Extended unless I'm going for a "creative" LUT. So Black & White or Bleach Bypass LUTs I load in myself.

Way back when I created my own LUT for a Display LUT that I used always up until Extended Video was introduced. Now I just uses Extended.

It's fantastic and very cinematic, absolutely!
I just thought it would be great to have a - or a series of - more stylized "looks" by Hook.

Robert, will these LUTs you posted work with URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 Gen 4 or just the BMPCCs?

EDIT: after looking at them, does it needs a gen4 to gen5 conversion first?

I think he coverted them to Gen 5 by putting a Gen 5 to --> Gen 4 conversion in front of them.

So, they should work.

I tried the Hook_Alexa on gen5 footage, and while it can look great, it does weird things to the red channel.

Man it would be great to have a couple of official, stylized look LUTs from Hook for the current BMD camera line-up.

Most of those old LUTs before I joined BMD were made for the original Cinema and Pocket cameras, both of which at the time output in sensor space/gamut with their log curves. I wouldn't imagine they translate that well to other cameras except under certain situations. Maybe the main "Film 2 Vid" one (not the BMCC version) would be okay.

That "Alexa" one especially was made for a particular job I did to match in a very specific situation, some asked for it so I shared but its really unlikely to work well otherwise and I wouldn't recommend it.

As to the original question, its been on my mind for years (and I still work on such things) but I really felt like there was no shortage of people offering looks/LUTs as time went on. But I still think about it and it gets discussed sometimes.

Thanks for chiming in Hook!

Yes, a lot of people offer LUTs and most of them are bad, free or paid. I'd love if you would add a stylized look to the official BMD lut library. Like Extended Video, just not bound to be a neutral starting point but with a little hook mojo.

Most LUTs ain't made by the Captain. It's a strange brew of color science and taste to make really fine, *useful* LUTs.

So I'm one who would be very pleased to see some new Gen5 Hook LUTs.

And I do not normally even look for LUTs nor use many!

The Alexa version didn’t look good on any test footage I applied it to, which is no wonder because what Hook wrote about its purpose. I just added it for the sake of providing the full set.

But most of the others looked nice in a particular way, like the basic, simple, vibe, neutral, and BMCC_Film2vid.

I also think the Mavo LUT does give a nice look.

Overall it can be pretty time consuming to develop a LUT which works great with almost every filming situation.

Can you provide some finished examples you think are having the look you are looking for?

First to Robert, thanks for providing the Gen 4 versions. That’s so kind of you.

For Alexa look LUTs, try out the https://www.butteryluts.com/ LUTs.

I think the Buttery LUTs are ok but the only commercial LUTs I personally dig and imo are better than buttery are the Phantom 'Arri looks' LUTs.

And remember, most of these guys creating and selling LUTs are not "color scientists", they're cameramen or content creators ect, pushing around buttons and parameters in Resolve until they think it looks nice. Most of the LUTs floating around the web are poorly designed and can act overly destructive on your footage.

I'm sure Hook could make look LUTs that are not only stunning but also optimally interact with BMD camera footage.

Idk but Roger Deakins' infamous custom LUT, that is used on every Alexa film he shoots, is nothing but an "adjustment to the contrast curve and the amount of color saturation".

As you mentioned, LUTs can't be too invasive as they need to work universally on scenes - which is where I'd trust Hook to find a nice balance that's also tailor made for BMD cameras.

I think Hook has given us something that is pretty universal and not invasive with 'Extended Video.' I consider it the official Blackmagic look. It has a discreet shift from the REC709 primaries that is really beautiful. I don't think of it as neutral.

So did the converted Hook LUTs give you what you were looking for?
Or what about the Kinefinity LUT I converted?

Is that the direction you want your image bend?

I really like the Kinefinity LUT, thanks Robert (but it does turn a yellow jacket into frog green hehe).
As Hook mentioned, the problem with his old, converted LUTs is that they were designed for totally different cameras/color science, so naturally they can cause destructive shifts.

I think of a theoretical Look library (aka "Hook Look Book") as something like what the Phantom LUT guy did with his Arri Conversion LUT, making 3 or 4 versions where he adds different flavors of mojo to the base LUT. Give them cool names and release with a press kit to let them indie filmmakers take notice :)

Huge thanks for the Luts! They're amazing!
Been using some paid luts (Phantom and P4K2ALEXA etc) but in my opinion these are so much better.

Reviving this post because I’m in search of a black and white (B&W)/monochrome/greyscale Rec.709 monitoring LUT for my Pocket 4K.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Moreover, if someone could guide me on how to create such a LUT in Resolve, it would be warmly welcomed.

I have previously generated 3D LUTs for monitoring by using Resolve, but I would like to understand the precise colour management and monochrome settings in order to tailor a B&W LUT specifically for the Pocket 4K.

BMD – it would be truly remarkable if upcoming cameras had a native B&W mode or a built-in monochrome LUT.

P.S. A Gen 5 LUT is what I’m looking for.

Stupid question, but what's stopping you from desaturating the official gen5 lut and exporting that?

Which colour management settings would you use?

I typically use ACES for post. However, for a Pocket 4K monitoring LUT, I’m guessing either DaVinci YRGB or DaVinci YRGB Color Managed would be more appropriate.

Additionally, I believe selecting Monochrome in the RGB Mixer would be preferable to using desaturation.

B&w is a generic word.
When you shoot in bw you have people on set, stenography, dress, makeup did for bw
And often you use different coloured filter to grab different contrast between color.
I build many different bw put for my cameras with different taste to red, green and blu, for my taste.
What do you need to do?

Definitely!
You can mimic classic B&W looks easily with that, from the times when B&W film was not sensitive to the whole spectrum yet.

Do you plan on doing updates in the future, like add a fine tune option ect?
