Unofficial BMPC 4k EF Lens Compatability List

I work as an aerial shooter in Nashville, Tennessee. However I started out working for 2 local rental houses and am still close friends with both. Today I'm taking the opportunity to test out the BMPC 4k with a wide variety of EF glass. I will be testing 3 things. Electronic aperture, image stabilization, and proper focus.

EDIT: You'll notice for IS testing, some say "Yes but not great". I didn't double check these on another camera body to see if the IS was better with the lens on another camera. So don't take this rating too critically. It could just be that these particular lenses don't have that great of IS, and not a fault of the BMPC.

Canon EF Primes:
14mm 2.8 (L) - Aperture to 22, IS N/A, Correct focus
24mm 1.4 v2 (L) - Aperture to 22, IS N/A, Correct focus

Do you have access to a 200mm F2?

I do, but it was rented out today. I'll check and see when it's coming back in and try to test.

Thanks!

The 8-15 looks great but really difficult to filter for outdoor use. Drop in filters on the 200mm should work.

To add to the list...

My 600mm f/4 L IS II works just fine with or without an extender 1.4x III or extender 2.0x III.

The only thing that doesn't work, that works with my 5D Mark III, is two stacked 2.0x III teleconverters (with an extension tube between them). That's a pure hack, not supported by Canon, so I'm not surprised.

Thanks Bruce. I added it to the list.

I will try to keep this list updated as best as possible.

Don't think I have access to a Tamron 70-200 2.8, but I'll ask.

"Focus does not work"? On which camera?

The BMPCC pocket cam features momentary auto focus, but the BMPC-4K cam does not have that feature. Or are you talking about something else? (This thread is about the BMPC-4K.)

Hey guys,

great review thanks for that!

Question about the Sigma 17-50mmF2.8 OS; Ian you said on IS n/a, but it actually has an image stabilizer. Didn't it work? What about the Focus control with a LANC Remote, is it possible to "step" through the focus points electronically?

Thanks for an answer!

Cheers

I had problems with the Tamron 70 - 200mm F2.8
The BMPC 4k locks up and won't turn on when the lens is attached. No scientific testing or anything but it happen twice.

My Tamron 24 -70mm F2.8 works like a charm... I'll stick with that for now

After another week of testing, I can confirm that the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 does not work at all with BMPC 4K.
LCD doesn't come on at all...

Have the firmware updates helped make image stabilization of Canon lenses work with the BM 4K?

The Canon EF-S 18-135 works very well. The IS performance on this lens is phenomenal.

I wonder why the Canon 10-22mm and 85 1.8 works on a 4K EF and not on the original 2.5 EF early version ?

The Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 ART lens DOES auto focus on the BMPC4K. Aperture also works fine (1.8-22).

Can also confirm:
Sigma 35 f/1.4 ART - Aperture to 16, IS N/A, Correct focus
Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 - Aperture to 22, IS Yes, Correct focus

My earlier post was from over a year ago. At that time the current firmware for the BMPC-4K didn't support momentary auto-focus. A subsequent firmware did, as do all the firmwares since.

I love using my Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens on my BMPC-4K, and frequently I use the momentary auto-focus feature.

Side note: I recently purchased a tiny Canon 24mm f2.8 STM pancake lens for my BMPC-4K, and together with a tiny 52mm Hoya ProND #8 [ND .9] filter it's become my favorite walk-around lens & filter on the BMPC-4K.

Hi Peter. I did realise your post was from some time back. Was just adding clarity as the post was resurrected. :-)

Good to know about the 24. It's been in my shopping list for a while. Nice affordable lens for small spaces or even gimbal use. :-)

Hi Peter,

Your unofficial list has become an important reference. If you have time it would be great if you could update it to match the most recent firmware.

The list at the beginning of this thread was posted by Ian Cresswell, not me:
viewtopic.php?p=121661#p121661

There's another similar list originally started for the BMCC-2.5K EF camera elsewhere on the forum (with many more user reports) that's probably just as useful as a starting point for BMPC-4K EF users (or prospective users):
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4651

I suspect Blackmagic Design supports the EF digital lens mount on all their EF camera models identically. Between firmware updates it's possible there might be a slight difference, where one cam model supports a few more lenses compared to another cam model -- until perhaps the next firmware release.

In addition to reading user reports, users should always confirm product compatibility and suitability for themselves. If possible, do your own tests of lenses and other accessories with your own camera before making a final purchase decision. If possible, borrow or rent gear for pre-purchase testing, and purchase from a dealer who allows a full-refund if products do not perform as hoped.
