Sigma Sport EF 70-200mm f2.8 on Blackmagic URSA 4K

PostSun Feb 11, 2024 9:36 am

I don't need to talk much, you already know what am looking for. Anyone here shooting or has shot video with the lens above on original URSA body? Am looking to hear about your experience and quality of this lens on the big URSA, before I buy the lens. Also, how possible is it shooting with this lens indoors, since it's full frame and URSA S35 sensor.

No experience on the big Ursa 4K, but I used this lens on Ursa Mini 4.6K and it worked fine for my use: doc, sports, outdoors. I didn't use it indoors much, only on close-up second angle for interviews, and documentary shoots when I had to stay further back and needed more reach. It covers 112-320mm on S35, I encountered no problems using it.

I'd pick the 24-70mm 2.8 Art for indoors over this one. It was by far my most used lens from Sigmas on my BM cameras (18-35, 24-70, 70-200 on UM4.6K, P4K, P6KPro's).

Sigma Sport EF 70-200mm f2.8 on Blackmagic URSA 4K

As Jukka indicates that lens has a long reach for indoor subjects. Could be ‘too close’ for your subjects. An app like Lens Toolkit f8 can show you your depth of field and field of view so you can judge if it’s suitable for your needs.

Edit
Correction, your lens is not included in the f8 database. I’ll try to see if the Canon f/2.8 70-200mm is a fair substitute but its close focus is almost 5’ away.

Okay, substituting the Canon equivalent, your lens at a distance of 4’11” will have a horizontal view of 1’6” and vertical view of 10” at 70mm. Depth of field is only 1” at f/2.8.
At 200mm f/2.8, DOF is 0.2” and FOV is 6” x 3”. Good if you’re wanting a shot of the actor’s eyes.

Now at what distances indoors would you expect to be shooting? If your camera to subject distance is 10’, at 200mm your FOV is 1’1” x 7”; at 70mm your FOV is 3’ x 1’8”. If your camera to subject is 40’, at 70mm you would be able to shoot 6’9” vertically, the full height of your actors.

Hi Jukka
Hi Rick Lang
Thanks to you both for your good technical guidance. I had traveled and didn't have network so I delayed to see the replies. I note both your input which I find good. I will pick Jukka's 24-70 f2.8 Art, used off eBay

Rick has given me a good tool to preview lenses even though this particular one is missing. I will obviously need to read again carefully the information you generated using the canon 70-200mm and test the Sigma to familiarize myself with it

I believe the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art is a much better choice than the 70-200mm for your first native L-mount lens if you go that route:

Using a native L-mount should give you more stability when torque is applied for manual adjustments. Given it has much more useful close focus compared to the 70-200, you can get very close to your subject if an extreme close-up is desired.

An alternative to the lens would be the Canon 24-70mm but by the time you add a good adapter to the lens, it’s about twice the cost:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/843008-USA

With the Sigma, shooting 70mm, close telephoto, at 12’, you’ll have a medium close shot over 6’ horizontally and over 4’ vertically with 1.25’ depth of field keeping your subject in focus. If you want to go wide at 24mm, shooting at 7’ to subjects, your frame will be 13.5’ by 7’ with almost 4’ depth of field for a medium shot.
