Lumix S5II w/BM VideoAssist vs Cinema Camera 6k FF?

PostTue Apr 02, 2024 10:20 pm

Currently I'm rolling with the Lumix S5II and a BM video assist. I love the footage it shoots but dislike how the monitor freezes when scrolling through clips and how many cables I have to connect. There also is the problem where BM has opted not to use a locking pin next to the 1/4" jack leading me to constantly have to tighten the mount so it doesn't twist. There's also the problem of not getting true 24p but that's Panasonic's fault and not BM's. The Samsung T7 disconnected randomly with the cable plugged in so that's a fun RMA to deal with...

What is the ideal camera setup for making content? There are so many choices and I've already gone through 7 cameras with no profit, so sufficed to say, I'm completely lost in this industry.

There will always be specialized filming scenarios that require special setups, but generally speaking, in the sub-$5,000 price range, there is NO better camera than the BMD Pocket Cinema Camera (4K or 6K, depending on lenses) recording internally to CFAST 2.0. :)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

The cameras do seem nice. I used to use a Pocket 4K but found gimbal mounting a pain (I think gimbals in general are a pain though).
Are steady cams or that weird fishing rod looking stabilizer a good alternative? Or maybe even using the new gyro stuff at the cost of the 180 shutter angle to preserve sharpness?

Where’s the problem with gyro and shutter angle? You just need to avoid hard bumps. Even those can be fixed to some degree in AE (I wish DR had such a filter).
That said, any kind of stabilization has its strengths and weaknesses.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

That's true. I just mean that with any electronic stabilization, natural shutter motion blur can cause blurring artifacts on the stabilized footage, which is why I shoot footage at 90 degrees that I plan to stabilize in post, adding a motion blur effect to taste as the first node after NR.

If you're talking about an easyrig when you mention a fishing rod, although that will make it easier to hold the camera by shifting the weight from your arms to your hips (which might make footage more stable), aan easyrig will not stabilize your footage. It will make your footage significantly LESS stable when you start walking because the cable will jerk the camera around.

Correct, an Easyrig must be combined with some additional means of stabilization, like a Serene.
Pretty high costs for a small and lightweight camera.
