Audio Inputs for BMPCC 6kPro: Transforming a 3.5mm to XLR

PostWed May 08, 2024 4:31 pm

I have two mics that have a 3.5 output cable into the camera (A VideoMicPro and a Wireless Go II).
I would like to use both mics at the same time one on the interviewed subject, the other to capture the background, but since there is only one 3.5 plug in the BMPCC 6kPro I'm trying to figure a way to use the other audio inputs on the camera to avoid using an external recorder.

I have tried using an adapter that transforms the 3.5cable into mini xlr but the adapters don't seem to work,
the audio channel set on XLR-1 or XLR-2 doesn't show any movement. I have bought a male TRStereo Audio to male Mini XLR 3 Pin by Amazon Brand XMSJSIY and tried it on the Wireless GO II without success and a female 3,5 to male Mini XLR and tried it on the VideoMicPro and Wireless GO II without any result.

Do you have any suggestions on specific adapters from 3.5 to miniXLR or from your experience do you think there is no way for these type of mics to transform their output to a different source available on the BMPCC 6K pro.

Thank you very much for your help

Can't speak to having done it successfully with that camera, but you probably need a transformer:

The Wireless Go II is a 2 channel receiver, best to use that with the 3.5mm and choose whatever channel(s) you want to record.

The Videomic pro outputs dual unbalanced mono. Adapting this output straight to a balanced XLR input will ensure no audio is transmitted as Common Mode Rejection will phase cancel the bulk of the signal.

You can use a transformer or an adapter wired thusly;

XLR Pin 1 to TRS Sleeve
XLR Pin 2 to TRS Tip
XLR Pin 3 to TRS Sleeve

Good Luck

Pick up two mics that have XLR outputs and use these... ;)

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Howard do you have any suggestions on specific products on the market that can do this job?

The RODE VXLR Pro Transformer is often cited but it has a XLR output which would need a second adapter to fit into the miniXLR of the BMPCC6k

I don’t think you’re going to find a transformer that’s integrated with ta3m (mini xlr) or 1/8” trs connector because they’re so small. A transformer will likely require another adapter.

For pre-built cables I’m not seeing much. You might find an 1/8” trs to ta3m left/right but that’s a little sloppy. Keep in mind that a trs Y is different than a trs left/right in that a Y is still balanced.

Cable Techniques has all the bits to solder your own if diy is your bag. Thinking about this it might be an interesting experiment to sum the mic channels, ultimately the sn ratio would be the same but it might prove useful given the camera’s historically weak preamps.

Good Luck

You are over-thinking this.

Plug your VideoMicPro into one of the Wireless Go II transmitters. Use the other transmitter as your second mic. Then you have both channels on your Wireless Go II receiver ready to output into your camera's 3.5mm input.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.
