Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8 L II USM

PostFri Oct 26, 2012 9:52 am

What people think of that?

http://www.digitalrev.com/product/canon ... MDI5OQ_A_A

It seems to be pretty sharp one. I had 70-200 II as my base comparison for sharpness

i also wonder if really good sharpness will affect material that you film a lot or not with bmc?
would it kill organic look or not ?

I just saw some reel with really interesting look. In the shot all was pin sharp but
stuff in dof are was pleasant like with some old movies you all have probably seen.
really exiting look to aim for

I've heard numerous times that it's one of Canon's sharpest zoom lenses, sometimes beating primes.

Hence why I opted to preorder it over the original version for my new 5D III.

But it's still on back order. Gah, I'm not having much luck lately with cameras.

to me on chart shots this 70-200 II 2,8 seemed even sharper all the way compared to 24-70 II 2,8

but makes me wonder how it will affect footage you shoot with bmc.

here some of guys shoot with promist to have more filmic look some use really old and soft lenses
but those have mostly bad color fringing.

I read the new and old versions of the 24-70mm F2.8 L USM are very much alike from F4.

The new version is much lighter but does not have that optical gain that is advertised.
Purchased the verison 1 24-70mm for 950US, I think that was a great deal but could not try it yet.

You can search for a review with this phrase: "Canon-EF-24-70mm-f-2.8-L-II-USM-Lens-Review "
>The "II" is considerably sharper than the "I" at f/2.8 and still noticeably sharper at f/4. The "II" retains >better contrast at even narrower apertures, but the differences are not as exaggerated.

Cheers

thnx.

all the input is really great.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Revi ... &APIComp=0

this was the chart i was talking about.

if you go over chart it changes to second glass chart in comparison.

i used this chart to find 2 of those.

all other are considerably softer in every aspect but i have to go more with wider ones at f2,8 and look some more.

i was considering sigma 8-11 and tokina 11-xx etc for lower end as well.
seems like the glass is like hobby of its own to get different ones and play with them etc.

Got this lens for my 550d. Very sharp. Too sharp for h.264 i found out but great for stills which was the main reason i bought it. Can't wait to try it on BMC.

Wouldn't the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS be the better choice since it has IS?

I have one.

But I'm getting the 24-70mm for my 5DIII mainly for stills, but it will also help as a generally better lens than the 17-55mm.

The 24-70 2.8L is wonderful, but not a very good street lens on anything but a full frame body. Primes are your friend for cinema...makes you work harder.

Don't work harder...work smarter! hahahaha I agree with you though. I have a nice arsenal of vintage primes and I love the organic look they produce, but then again I love the versatility, when I Run'n'Gun, of my 24-70.

Ok but you think 24-70 will look too hd and pinsharp on video?

I like the organic look but it would be simple to reproduce also with cheaper and
Softer lenses?

Too sharp? I don't know about that. There's ways of softening a very sharp lens...even just making the image less contrasty in post works. I'd rather start very sharp and have the option of softening than to be only soft and need the sharp for a car commercial or something with a lot of detail. But if you mean sharp like a Zeiss Ultra Prime compared to a Cooke Panchro, uhm , it's more like an Ultra Prime: sharp, contrasty, vibrant colors but maybe a little "too real" sometimes.

As for working smart? If the picture sucks, you ain't close enough! :D

yes i meant zeiss kind of sharp.

i agree it is simple to blur it down by pro mist etc.

on some comparison chart those L series seemed more sharp even than zeiss
but i can not remember the model. probably photo lenses.

what i have seen some fellows shoot on red and images are just boring hd in looks.
but in the same time some other guy gets really organic film look.

really depends on dop a lot

It does. The better hammer doesn't make you a better carpenter, but the tool does give you the capability to learn and grow. A great carpenter with a poor hammer is still a great carpenter, but is limited by the quality of the tool. An arrogant carpenter with a great tool will always be arrogant and will never be willing to grow and learn and will always buy the next best thing hoping that the tool will make him achieve greatness, not hard work and inner growth.

ok i see the point to have all the sharpness there is and dialing it down as needed.

i consider myself as not even novice at cinematography. this is why i discover all of this.

you would go wit this 24-70 or something else?

i see as this current 24-70 II and 70-200 II to be realtively sharper compared to most other
photo lenses now.

or you would go with some other glass?

And of course i have financial limitations as i can not go to store right now and buy all Zeiss super primes :D

Do you have this video somewhere with bigger image?

I can see it on my 24" rather tiny.

Ok it seems sharp but still would like to see more up close.
