Thanks finally for Some Reasonable But Late Info, but Sound?

PostFri Apr 11, 2014 7:24 am

So Kristian Lams post finally provides a road map, but there is no mention about repairing the equalization issues. Can you advise us if that is on any list. We want the meters, but the sound reproduction itself must also be cleared up.

especially as it was better on earlier firmwares, let's hope this fix is so obvious they even don't talk about it.

I don't want to appear obsessive, but I am going to bump this until we get an answer. Communications maybe coming out, but this is an age old bug. And we know it's a bug, because it didn't happen in firmware 1.2.

Low frequency roll off issue. What's going on?

Bump!

Unfortunately for users, it was so obvious that BMD has ignored it for months (>year?)!

I understand BMD's desire for firmware "unified design" purity -- all cams sharing similar code-base -- but for ages they should have at least put the BMCC's audio EQ back the way it was in v.1.2.

Clearly BMD's truly talented engineers know how to address this issue, but their bosses wouldn't (and still don't) let them! Not someday "soon", but months ago!

yeah I'll bump this too since I'm the one that mentioned it in the Thx Kristian thread and never got a response. So lets see if we can get an answer soon or if BMD is back to it's old tricks already.

Recall what happened with the Pocket's white orbs. Lynch mobs were formed here and BMD finally broke their wall of silence and communicated their lungs out. Once the "issue" was fairly well dealt with, they quickly returned to the cloak of secrecy. Since insiders have clearly said this is a part of their corporate culture, it doesn't seem logical to expect them to sustain the level of communication we've seen in the last days...the mob is dwindling...back behind the closed doors.

Last week's update from Kristian is the most up to date information on the firmware updates.

Sorry to be repetitive, but once we have more information we'll definitely let you know.

Hi Terry, thanks for acknowledging. Appreciate you aren't at liberty to comment even if would like to. However, this will continue to be bumped everyday until we get an answer to a problem that is 18 months old.

This isn't a feature request. The product has a bug and it needs addressing at fixing.

Thanks again.

Terry:

Is it possible no one at Black Magic really understands the issue ?

We do believe that this can be easily addressed, since by history, the camera had a full sound reproduction in firmware 1.2. The problem then was a DC offset issue. In the following versions the DC offset was gone, without any announcement that a fix was made. The problem was that in each successive version, the low end of audio reproduction has disappeared.

Agreed! I really wish Blackmagic would just fix this one bug on the existing 1.4.1 firmware, and release it as a patch to shut us all up.

They were able to release 1.3.1 incredibly quickly when camera's were crashing after selecting DNxHD - so we know they have the ability to hunt down bugs and release a fix within a couple of days.

Given that the problem didn't exist in the 1.2 firmware, I can't imagine it's an massive problem to solve.

I completely get that Blackmagic want to move to the new unified firmware - and this definitely makes sense moving forward. I completely appreciate that it's a big job, and very complex, but once it's done everyone wins. HOWEVER, in the meantime, if they could just spend a couple of days addressing this single minor bug, that would make a lot of users all around the world very happy.

If they fix this one bug, then I'm done - I'm happy with both the BMCC and BMP4K, and I'll leave everyone on this forum alone!

Given that Blackmagic have SPECIFICALLY left out any mention of the frequency response bug in the announcements of future firmware updates, and have ignored multiple messages on the forums about the issue - who knows if this issue will be fixed in the new firmware anyway, it doesn't sound like it's a priority.

Please, just release a patch to the 1.3.1 firmware, then we'll shut up, and you can be left alone to work on your new unified firmware.

My 2c.

Thanks Tony, that's good of you to do that. Disappointing there's nothing official, but I (and I'm sure everyone else does) appreciate you escalating this for us.

I'll reduce the frequency of bumps for the mean time for once a week. If I've not heard anything in about 4 weeks, I'm going to start doing what I can to make some noise again. Hope you understand, it's just BM have a habit of going quiet unless driven for a response.

Thanks heaps again.

Finally gave up waiting for an official BMCC audio fix, bought a tascam dr-40 for $125 on ebay. Audio meters, low end and peak protection mode where it records a -X db copy of track 1 on track 2. simple solution. Now I just have to get used to wasting hours syncing audio

I actually bought the DR60 with free Plural Eyes 3 for $199.00 from BH photo. Still want to be able to feed from that to the camera, with full tonal range in camera.

We'd really love to know if you're doing anything about the lack of low frequency response in the audio since firmware v1.2 - it was working then, but starting with v1.3 it's very thin sounding. Will that be part of this upgrade?

Yes, this will be addressed as part of the update.

Also does the new debayer fix the orange for red issue?

No, the debayering will not fix this. We'll look into this but it's fundamentally the "look" of the colour science in the camera. Simply changing this will affect how the image will be rendered in terms of skin tones etc.
