Sony just announce a new OPEN FORMAT XAVC that supports tons of codec/resolution/bit rate/color depth. Since its open, any chance the BMCC might adopt it thru a future firmware update? Maybe its 60p flavor?:)

"Built with the principles of workflow efficiency, evolution and optimised image quality at its heart, Sony’s
XAVC can support the following content formats:
• 4K (4096 x 2160 and 3840 x 2160), HD and proxy resolution
• MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression
• 12, 10 and 8 bit colour depth
• Up to 60fps
• MXF wrapping format can be used
• 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0 colour sampling
Note: Each manufacturer will decide which profile and operating point of XAVC they will implement in
their products."

I agree with you Margus.. The reason Sony is not using Prores or Avid DNxHD, is because Sony have their own codecs and it won't be an ideal for the company to use codecs that is not developed by their own!!

Sony has a habit of making its own proprietary things, even if they are open.

Sony "open" = "Embrace, extend, extinguish".

Cheers.

May for those who wants to ise this for event work..majority of which uses 5D, which consequently are the target market of BMCCs pricing. An efficient compressed codec that doesnt take as much space but retains lots of info can be a good third alternative...especially since having 60p might require the BMCC to drop bitrate.

this is so ..... Sony ...... there are tons of codecs out there and instead of simplifying things they bring a new codec ...... and as for Sony - it will never be really OPEN ......

Also, their sensors are a little too "clean" for my taste. A little too "sharp." There's moments of "wow, that looks like film" stifled with shots that look like prosumer video. Case in point: recent Michael Mann movies...

I´m new member of forum. I´d like to point that XAVC is clearly intended for 4K productions. Sony is going over Panasonic (which is sleeping with P2 products... ). ProRes and DNxHD are "just" HD Formats. BMCC is "just" 2K and HD Camera. Maybe, in the future, BMD would develop a 4K camera, again, under US$ 4k.... but, first, we have to wait for BMCC.

Best Regards,
