Apply a standard (Rec. 709) look in FCPX 10.1.2?

PostFri Jun 27, 2014 11:19 pm

So with the new FCPX 10.1.2 update today, one of the listed features is:
Apply a standard (Rec. 709) look in real time to high dynamic range and wide color gamut video from ARRI, Blackmagic Design, Canon, and Sony cameras
How exactly does this work?

If you have ProRes footage in FCPX that's shot with BMD Film mode, select the clip(s) and open the inspector (far left). Click the info tab and select Settings at the bottom instead of Basic. You will then see a drop down menu to select the appropriate LUT.

Removed my less eloquent explanation, but here's a screen shot now that I figured out how to delete my other pics-

Are they using their own LUT or giving you the option to apply your own?

It's just their own LUT sadly, but if it was easy to implement I hope they have an option to use custom LUTs in the future.

I have a feeling thats where its going, which is really cool.

I tried the BMD LUT on some bmpcc footage and it was pretty ugly...very yellow and blown out...the 4k one was much better for some reason? Interesting...

I attempted a quick test video to show the difference between unaltered film mode footage, the new FCPX LUT, and both new Rec 709 LUTs in Resolve 11. Take a look:
