During the Registration process, it is stated:
The theory of this rule, which has existed since the creation of these forums, is that users who can be clearly identified will be more respectful than those who remain anonymous.
As far as what counts as a "real name," please use your first and last name either as your username or in your signature. You can update your username here or update your signature here.
