can you recommend accessories for bmpcc and speed booster?

PostMon Oct 20, 2014 8:09 pm

Hi, I have the bmpcc and the sigma 18 35 with EF mount. I´m going to buy the metabones EF bmpcc speedbooster and I want to know If I need something else to use it without problems (for instance you can say that it´s too heavy to use and it´s better to buy a cage, a plate to hold de booster and the lens or something like that). As I live in Argentina and a friend is flying to USA I can´t go to the store and ask a lot of questions or test the products. Are this things useful? http://www.amazon.com/SmallRig-BMPCC-Ca ... ords=bmpcc

http://www.amazon.com/Handle-Baseplate- ... Q9VQQDTZHQ

Also I have a Zoom H4N and in some ocations it would be very useful to attach it to the top/bottom of the camera, what do you recommend? (I know it´ll look like a monster but the audio quality of the bmpcc is bad and some times I have to shoot easy footage alone)

Thank you!

So far I'm doing ok with a tripod attached to the camera body, and a monopod. I don't think you can hand hold this combo and get steady results.
You're going to need an IR Cut (Hoya) and ND's.
I do have a cage (Viewfactor). I'm not sure it's essential, but it's often handy.

Thank you for the answer. Just to be sure when you use it with a tripod you attach the camera to the plate without any other accessory? I read somewhere that this combo was too heavy to do that.

I have the Pocket with the Nikon MFT Speed Booster and the Wooden Camera cage is perfect, the Speed Booster's base plate lines up in front of the cage and with a long plate like those used on a Manfrotto video head and others allows two bolt connection, so you get a secure mount. With the Sigma zoom, I Would add a rail baseplate (Imuse the Edelkrone rail kit avail from B&H) and a lens support like the Ikan lens support, small, light and works great. The Wooden Camera Pocket Cage is worth the $95, as you can add an outstanding USB clamp to protect Pocket camera connector.

I would also add a good monitor or EVF. I use the Zacuto EVF, and also got the Ikan D5(W) monitor for tripod rig shooting.

Oh yeah, the screen is very hard to use in daylight. So I'm using the Zacuto loupe.
The Zacuto is also a bit annoying for various reasons, so i would check around for more recommendations on monitors, EVF's and loupes.
Yes, I removed the tripod support from my Speedbooster. It was too tight with the Viewfactor cage. Other cages might make it easier to leave on and use.
I don't use the Sigma 18-35mm exclusively, so the short time it's installed on the camera I think the pocket cam mount can cope with.

I have the same setup as Chris and everything holds up fine. Blackmagic makes pretty sturdy mounts id say. All in all the lens isnt really that heavy, I believe its weight has been a bit overstated.

I should note that the Metabones does slightly shift when on the camera. I emailed Metabones and they said they would be sending out some tools to make it a tighter fit. It doesnt seem that I am the only one to have this issue either.

I didn't have a cage either for the first weeks and did some shoots with a monopod attached to the speedboosters mount - no problems at all. But you DO need some sort of Viewfinder to be able to see anything on that screen outside. And a variND and IRCut as already mentioned.
As a to-go-audio-solution I either use the Rode Stereo Video Mic pro or the Ohrwurm 3-microphones plugged into the Pocket, both give enough signal to be able to use it as an atmosphere track on the videos.

Now I bought the Varavon cage only of the VARAVON ARMOR POCKET for BMPCC CAGE, as this let me use my Kinothek Viewfinder and the Metabones' tripod-mount as well.

Sorry to hijack this thread!

Edward, I got the same problem, would you mind sharing the e-mail-address you sent your request to? I didn't get an answer from them with my attempts. Thanks!

If that is the only lens you have right now it might be worthwhile to invest 10 $ into a dumb EF-to-MFT-adapter, which makes your Sigma a tele-zoom (you can't control aperture with that adapter, but what I do is, just dial in the aperture once the Sigma is on the Speedbooster, remove both and put the Sigma on the dumb adapter and it keeps the aperture set on the Speedbooster).

+1 on that Edward, I'm also experiencing a slight rotation on the Speedbooster when locked at the camera end and the lens end.

Also I have a Canon 50mm 1.4. Here in Argentina it´s more common the EF mount in rental stores, also I have a T2i, mi idea is to start buying EF lenses.

There´s a good dumb adaptor with aperture control to use with EF lens?

+1, same here, but using the WC cage with the Speed Booster solved the problem, locking the two bases together. I think the Pocket' lens mount has slightly more play in it than the Panasonic mounts do. The mount on my AF100 is noticeably tighter than the Pocket camera.

If you use AF-lenses then you won't be able to change the aperture with a dumb adapter - if you use manual lenses, e.g. Samyang/Rokinon with an EF-mount, then of course. A dumb adaprer has no electronical connection, hence the work-around to change the aperture while the lens is on the metabones speedbooster and put it on the dumb adapter then.

There are dumb adapters which have an in-built aperture, but I never read good reviews about them.

Thomas, I emailed them at support@metabones.com

They seem to be a little slow with their communication, and their English isnt that great but they should get back to you within the week.

I should also mention that I am not using the BMPCC specific Speedbooster but rather the generic EF to MFT Metabones Speedbooster so that way I can slap the adapter both on my BMPCC and my GH2.

I am sure that Metabones is aware of this issue, so if you email them they should send you some parts to make the necessary adjustment. I think I should see mine in about two weeks...

I´m very glad to see that we are in the same direction: I have the Lumix 14-42, the sigma 18-35, (will have) the metabones speedbooster, the same batteries, the sandisk extreme cards and in a near future will buy some filters like those you have.

Do you have good results with the fotodiox adapter with aperture ring?

It works fine with the lens combo I have, but I rarely ever need to use it.
I can only think of a few situations where I have.

As far as what tripod/monopod to use it is really a toss up. I still use my old beatup DSLR tripod ive used since 2008.

How do you attach the strap to your pocket camera? I use the wrist lanyard which came with the body when I'm just carrying it around, but there's only one attachment point. I've really missed a shoulder strap to free up both hands.

I somehow forgot to mention that I use the Viewfactor cage for the BMPCC.

The cage happens to be one of the more important things I have purchased.
