I had a breaking news fire video that I was rushing to post and decided to experiment with video levels to save time. I was using URSA to shoot in ProRez 422LT. I took it directly into my Vegas Pro editing program. After a quick edit, in order to save time, I decided to skip adjusting video levels (they were 0-255) to 16-235 as I would usually do, and let the chips fall where they would. I just wanted to see what it would look like on Vimeo. I rendered to Blu-ray 1920x1080-24p, 10Mbps video stream for Vimeo as I usually do.
When I looked at the video on Vimeo expecting to see crushed blacks etc. I was surprised to find nice looking video. I could see detail in the blacks, much more contrast, and dynamic range than if I had adjusted the levels to 16-235, which usually provides a washout look. In other words much better looking video.
It seems sometimes breaking the rules really pays off, but I don't understand why? Any thoughts?
