Ursa mini power draws and other battery solution

PostMon Apr 20, 2015 5:20 pm

hello

I found that other battery such as BPU is much smaller and lighter than Vmount style battery.

Has Blackmagic published the full spec of power draw yet?

Anyway, if it turns out to be around 40W per hour, I think the BPU will work.

Do you think these BPU battery and adapter will work?

nebtek has XLR and passthrough. (no spec on Watt capacity)

According to the information on Blackmagic's website: "... URSA Mini includes a 4-pin XLR industry standard power connector that works with 12V to 30V external power supplies. ..."
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... icursamini

The Nebtek battery plate you linked to outputs "passthrough" voltage from a Sony BPU-type battery. In other words, nominally 14.4 volts.

So, yes, you should be able to power a URSA Mini using that Nebtek plate & BPU battery.

Blackmagic hasn't published a power consumption spec for the camera. (The camera isn't finalized yet.) Probably at some point between now and when the camera actually starts shipping that information will become available.

Don't know if it can be mounted at the back of the URSA Mini

The only complain when I was using my bmcc is mounting the external battery

By the way, Does URSA mini comes with any battery or built in battery?

it probably won't come with any battery. And there is no built in battery, probably due to complaints they got from the last camera that had built in battery.

The URSA mini doesn't ship with the battery adapter plate. It can use either a gold mount plate or V-mount plate. From what I can tell, they use the same plates that fit on the regular URSA

Another advantage of V-mount or (Anton-Bauer style) gold-mount plates is that most include a d-tap/p-tap power connector on the plate. Very useful for powering accessories.

Also, as on ENG cameras, the battery is part of the camera's balance system, to counterbalance weight of the lens and center the camera on either your shoulder or tripod set up. Without the rear mounted battery, camera will be front heavy.

I think I'd rather just use V-Mount batteries. That thing seems to be a pain, and I doubt it would last as long as a good V-Mount anyway.

Not to mention the fact that you'll have to charge even more batteries...

I got one of these to use on my AF100 when my AB battery died, works, but is akward to use, larger firm factor when loaded with big NP batteries, mount is not as tight as AB battery, and record/run time is a lot less. Bought a new AB battery, only way to go. Any one want to buy a barely used one with 2 NP batteries? pm me, going cheep!

Hehe. A relatively inexpensive 90wh Vlock Switronix on a proper Vlock battery adapter is not too bad, price-wise. I am a big fan of bricks and always favored the big AB hytrons in my broadcast days. Heavy = smooth and I like smooth a lot more than I hate heavy. DSLR batteries have no place on a Ursa Mini except in maybe an emergency last resort situation, but who would be that careless?

hello

Thanks for all of your suggestions and its good to hear that other battery solution might work as long as power draws is within the battery specification : )

By the way, I didnt mentioned, but the reason I dont want vmount is that I want to use Ursa as a light travel camera.

it will be on tripod or my backpack 100% of the time with no rig whatsoever, thats why I want the setup to be as compact as possible : D
