Tokina 11-16mm Mark 1 or Mark 2?

PostTue Dec 18, 2012 8:23 pm

Hi everyone,

As far as I know, the only difference between the Mark 1 and Mark 2 versions of the Canon mount Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 lens is that the Mark 2 has supposedly better coating. I am wondering if it's worth the extra £100 and if it's even noticeable in real life usage. Has anyone used both versions and noticed a difference?

Yes, I believe it should on paper. Just wondering how the two versions compare in real life?

Ken Rockwell: "This "II" version of lens should have the same optics which I so favorably reviewed in the first version of this lens back in 2006. See that review for details. This sample of "II" lens I borrowed doesn't seem to be as good, so I'll chalk this up to sample variation, which is always going to be more likely with off-brand lenses." http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm-ii.htm

So his Mark 2 wasn't as good as his Mark 1 :/

I've been wondering the same thing. Also wondering if I should put through the Duclos Cine-mod starting with a Nikon mount but changing it to a EF mount to have a manual aperture ring.

Somehow my gut feeling says, "Just buy the cheaper Mark 1!". £359 seems like a good deal vs. £449 for the Mark 2. I can always spend that extra £90 on other gear.

One positive aspect of the Mark 1 is that it still has the nicer looking silver labeling and ring at the front, which are both golden on the Mark 2. The black & silver suits the BMCC better - not like this matters when using the lens

I have the mark I with the Nikon mount. I use it on my Sony F3 and also have adapters with aperture control to use it on a BMCC with either MFT or EF mount. I had it modded at Duclos. It's a great versatile lens.

What was done in the mod? Jus the addition of the lens gear?

I can't speak for Vince, but Duclos has a whole bunch of things they typically do, as this is a popular lens for them. De-clicking the aperture ring, and replacing the body with aluminum, etc.

That link is to their complete custom rebuild/rehousing which includes the PL mount and a waiting list of over 6 months.

:-)

Modding a standard Tokina would be much simpler. The aperture on the Nikon mount Tokina has no clicks as it's a "G" type lens. Just interested in what he had done.

I recently have a few Zeiss lenses modded by True Lens Service in the UK. Did a great job. Declicked, Focus Ring, 80mm fronts and lens caps.
