Bh Photo Now says 4.6k mini mid-end of November

PostTue Sep 22, 2015 12:36 am

Bh is now saying that 4.6k mini will hit mid-end of November. Information from a phone call today via Uriah Herr.

Just a heads up.

You know this is guess work don't you?

Only Blackmagic engineers know how close they are and even that can be approximate if they find something bad that turns up in testing.

Once the 4.6k cameras are in beta testers hands and we start seeing test footage then we know it's getting closer.

They don't guess - they are in direct contact with Blackmagic.

You can believe that estimates are accurate but from past experience I don't.

I feel better estimates can be made once the cameras are in beta testers hands.

With NDAs though, we might not know if they are in their hands :P

Count yourself luck if you receive it before the end of the year. Those familiar with BM and shipping would have told you that from day one.

I love me some BMD but they're ability to come nowhere near close to a ship date is legendary.

The joke in all the gear shops when the URSA Mini was announced: "Blackmagic says July. So Christmas. If you're lucky."

From past history. Bh is very close with these estimates, as I'm pretty sure they are in contact with BM. I believe every camera that hits the US goes through 1 source media first. They'd be the people to have the most accurate guess.

This is just based off my previous experience with BMCC, Bmpcc, and Ursa purchases.

I'm curious about the PL mount. It doesn't have an estimated date, I wonder if it'll arrive later than the EF mount

Bh Photo Now says 4.6k mini mid-end of November

PostTue Sep 22, 2015 4:55 pm

Well up until a week ago, if you wanted an URSA Mini in a hurry, you would order the PL mount because the demand for it was far less than the EF version. Now that BMD is offering a removable PL mount with a BMD B4 mount including an optical adapter and that we realize it may be left to third party companies to offer additional mounts for the PL version of the camera, well, all bets are off.

I think every week that goes by now more and more people will be switching their orders from EF to PL. Yes, there are lots of people with Canon EF lenses and they may stay with the Mini EF, but anyone with manual EF lenses should definitely switch. Although I'm seeing some indications that people with Canon EF lenses are considering the PL mount now because of the greater flexibility in lens choices it may prove to offer.

How this plays out will likely be unknown to us. If the increased interest in the PL mount is strong, even BMD may be unprepared for the switch in demand and PL mount could become a scarce commodity for anyone who had not preordered before the IBC 2015.

Or dropping their orders for Red's Raven. It is going crazy over at Red. I really hope the ursa mini stands up to the 15 stops without compromising on image quality like fix noise pattern and stuff. If that happens it will be rma for me and last time with bm. That Red is really tempting

i would not get too excited....ursa mini 4.6 will ship long before raven....and while we don't know yet if the ursa 4.6 will have 15 stops DR, we do know that dragon does not have 15 stops DR....red claims on DR and iso are famously overblown....
i call a ursa mini 4.6 price drop of 1000$ a week before the raven ships:)

I sure hope blackmagic do well. I really like to support them but the production 4k camera really let me down with the fixed noise issues. I sold it month after knowing the fireware didn't correct all the issues. Still got my bmcc thou. Let just hope they drop the price sooner :) so no angry early adopter.

Well, as far as I am aware, there is no EF adapter for PL, so people with Canon lenses would stick with EF, so they don't have to re-invest in lenses. Not to mention the huge price difference in PL vs EF glass.

I would also say that the EF mount is lighter, and the lenses are typically much lighter as well.

Plus the EF model is $500 cheaper.

So I would still argue that EF has its place in the market.

Seeing my quote out of context, I can see that I may not have said it as clearly as I should have. I'm not asking people with EF lenses to switch to using PL lenses on the Mini PL camera. In the context of what I was talking about, I am referring to the possibility that the Mini PL mount can be removed and replaced by a custom manual EF mount if the FFD on the Mini PL camera is sufficiently shallow enough. So not an adapter, but a custom EF mount that replaces the removable Mini PL mount (as it is designed to be removed to substitute BMD's B4 optical mount).

Hope that is clear now. Sorry about the ambiguity in my previous post.

No worries. I was confused by the verbiage is all. If a third party manufacturer managed to come up with a solution to the FFD issues and made a dumb EF mount that would be great.

Unfortunately for EF users, there's no guarantee that that will ever happen, and if it does it may be quite some time before we would see one.

Fortunately for everyone, these cameras are so cheap you could opt to buy both models, and just switch out the camera when need be.

Exactly.

Not everyone is "shooting a movie" or "film style". Some use auto-focus occasionally. Many want a less-expensive, simpler, lighter-weight camera system. Heck, some are shooting a movies using BMD's original gear with EF lenses.

It's great that BMD already offers a wonderful range of camera gear (from the original BMCC to the excellent new URSA Viewfinder), with more on the way "soon".

No it's actually on-set with John Brawley who's testing the cameras ATM. Ernest is directing the TV series.
