Just got it but LENS LENS LENS!!

PostThu Oct 15, 2015 3:04 am

I just got the BMPCC...Great..but what lens can I use to shoot films etc.. I got a Olympus 40-150 mm 5.6 which totally sucks!! The crop factor sucks... I can stand a mile a way and im still seeing everything close up!! I don't want to spend 600 on a meta bones and then spend another 1k for a canon lens..are there in really good cinematic micro 4/3 lenses??

I just picked up with Lumix 20mm 1.7F and it's pretty nice, fast, too. Otherwise, you can buy an MFT to vintage lens (Nikon, Canon FD, etc) and pick up some cheap primes used.

In expensive starter lenses:

1. Look for sellers on Ebay who are selling kit lens from Lumix camera. I bought a 14-42 for about $100 US. Electronics work directly on the BMPCC, it has image stabilization for hand held shooting, They are slow, however, at (3.5 to 5.6 F stops.)

2. I've bought 3 "video lenses" on ebay with cmount, along with an adapter to the micro four thirds mount. I got a 12.5, a 25, and a 35. They are small and light. I have not taken time to compare images closely. Bought these for somewhere around $ 30 each. F stops are around 1.3 and up.

3. I've also adapted my old Nikkor glass with an appropriate adapter. These are fully manual lenses circa 1970 and 1980's.

4. The Tokina 12-16mm goes for about $300 US, and is faster than the Lumix kit lens. A lot bigger lens that takes up a bigger foot print.

If you want a quality cheap variant I advice a noname speedbooster and a vtg (for instance M42) stills 28-70 zoom. This combo covers 75% of my needs (really I have 2 zooms - one is slightly sharper and the second has macro and allows to shoot bugs)

If you want a nice vtg zoom lens which is quite soft I advice a Canon V-series lens (V6x16, V6x17 etc) or Fujinon C-series (A C6X17.5B is on Ebay now). Both need machining to fit into C/MFT adapter. They (at least V6x16) are TOO soft to my taste but my taste is quite specific. Other series would vignette.

The set of C-mount primes as well is the set of vtg primes on a speedbooster is nice but too troublesome for a novice to choose. But the C-mount fisheye is tempting...

Maybe just buy a Lumix 14-42?

A good starting zoom is the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 zoom, takes you from wide at 12mm, to normal AOV at 16-17mm and short tele at 25mm, and 35mm for tight head shots. Look for a good used one on eBay or other online sources, make sure it has the most recent firmware update, as you need a Panny camera to update the lens.

Two other lenses I use on my Pocket include the Pana Leica 15mm, very nice fast lens and the Pana Leica 45mm Micro, has IS, can be handheld, and gives a nice tight long shot. I also, had the Pana Leica 25mm, but lacks IS, so has to be use on a tripod.. Mbut the three make for a nice starter prime kit, and all enjoy the same IQ, so work well together. However, these three lenses, will cost more that a used or new 12-35 zoom.

Of course 50-140 sucks. As well as the pana 45-150. They are much too long and too slow.

Good lenses I own and use regularly with the bmpcc:

- pana 20/1.7 (focussing not so good, focus by wire)

- sigma 19/2.8 (good cheap lens, focus by wire, but much better than the 20/1.7
(actually I bought the lens for my underwater housing for my pana GF3)

- slrm 12/1.6

- pana 7-14, quite expensive, and only f4, but sharp and short, slight barrel distortion

- pentacon 50mm and 29mm (old east german lenses) the 50mm is really good

- I didn't use the 14-42 on the bmpcc, it sucks, barrel distortion at 14 and too slow

Lenses I tried:

- pana 15 mm, a very good lens

- olympus 17/1.7 also good

- olympus 12 mm (I didn't tried it on the bmpcc, but on the pana G3)

- voigländer 25 mm/0.95, actually a bad bokeh, CAs and unsharp wide open, very sharp at f4

Lenses I would look if I were you:

- SLRM 12, 10, 17, 25, 35 mm
- Rokinon/Samyang
- Sigma 19, 30
- some old super 16 lenses (very hard to find I think)
BMPCC, Lumix G3, GF3
pana 7-14, SLRM 12/T1.6, sigma 19, pana 20/1.7, pana 14-42, pana 45-150,
pentacon auto 29/2.8, 50/1.8, 135/2.8.

You just need to get used to the fact you will need to own multiple lenses (so you can pick the right lens for the shoot, and even the right lens for the particular shot) and you'll end up spending in total much more on lenses than on the camera body itself.

I second the vote for the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 pancake lens. It makes a great compact combo with the Pocket and has great performance. The first version, which is no longer made, has better corner performance and a little lower contrast. Pick one of these on Ebay and you'll be golden. I made a short test video using it wide open here:https://vimeo.com/102792268

Thanks guys for all the replys.. Here is what I settled on..

Its a Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine Canon EF Lens w/Cordvision Cine ring.. quality seems good.. and I think it will be fine for documentary and for music video shoot.. Let me know what you guys think..

Even with a Speed Booster, 85m. Gives the AOV of a 50mm lens, this is a fairly long tele lens for the Pocket camera, it's like shooting with 140mm lens on a DSLR. You should also get something wider to go with it, like a 24 or 35mm lens, which will give you a more normal AOV with the SB. If you like "long" lenses on the Pocket camera, you could also, look at the Panny Leica 45mm, it has a great IS that works well, and is more compact than the Canon 85 w/SB and would give a similar AOV for long shots.

Congrats... but keep calm and research.

Browse the pocket camera and blackmagic user group on vimeo. There you'll find plenty of footage and examples. There is no perfect lens.

The 14mm pancake is a great all around prime. It's wide enough for most shots and focuses close.

For a great all around zoom mft the lumix 12-35 is a great option but more pricey.
