Tokina 11-16mm - Nikon Mount Test - DNGs

PostSat Jan 12, 2013 10:56 am

Yesterday between a few production meeting I got a chance to shoot some test footage with the Tokina 11-16mm Nikon mount.

Nothing scientific and the conditions were typical for London in the winter with a light mist/haze.

I shot the same scene with the Carl Zeiss ZF.2 to uses as reference. On the Tokina was turned to full infinity and then back just a touch. I'm happy with the result from the Tokina. Shot wide open and then again at about f8.

As I was shooting with a simple set-up exposure was controlled with L.W.C. Fader-ND MKII. Exposure was based on the in camera zebras. I set them to 100% and then used the Fader-ND to lower the exposure until no zebras were visible (except the sun it's self).

A few DNGs can be downloaded here, includes notes:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6460491/BMCC_Tokina_test.zip

Attached images are simple grades done in Lightroom just for reference. Download the DNGs and have a play.

What adapter are you using to control the iris?

On the Tokina I used a Novoflex Nikon G to Canon EF adaptor. It has a tab on the side for controlling the aperture. Great build quality. MTF in the UK also make a really good one. The cheap eBay ones tend to be of lesser build quality.

On the Zeiss I was using a cheap adaptor from eBay. It does not have aperture control for G lenses. The Zeiss has an aperture ring tho (mine have been de-clicked) so no need for it.

for some reason, when I open these in resolve, they open as 256x144 8bit.....

every other DNG ive got seems to work fine.

When I open them in Photoshop they are fine.

Anyone got any suggestions?

That's very odd. Might be the way I exported the DNG frames from Lightroom. It should have just saved the original file.

Will pull them direct from the SSD tomorrow evening when I'm back at my Mac and upload a new zip file.

Thanks. Very little work from me tho. The camera is really easy to work with.

I'm really looking forward to shooting some proper stuff soon. A few productions in the wings.

Looking good Adam. I've got some free time at the end of next week (hopefully) so I'll try and put some bits and pieces up from around York/Yorkshire.

I've uploaded 13 DNG's (single frames from 13 different shots) here:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6460491/BMCC_DNGs.zip

These are straight off the SSD and includes a few shots that were not in the original zip file.

Thank you, can't wait to take a look. You guys with your cameras are like drug dealers, serving DNG's to those who can't make their own haha

Well from my limited knowledge which I gained on using most of the lenses among my friends and mine, I understood that the Carl Zeiss lenses surely has an upper hand when it comes to quality and crisp images. It can be very well seen in the picture too.

Now Tokina have just announced they're producing an 11-16mm with a PL mount for US$1899.

http://www.newsshooter.com/2015/09/13/i ... n-e-mount/

Damn, I just dropped US$3500 on a GL optics version.
