BMMCC: Aperture control with Speedbooster

PostSun Nov 08, 2015 9:14 am

Hi!

Does anybody use the Micro Cinema Camera (Prod. 4k) with Metabones Speedbooster EF-M43S?

This adapter should be able to control the aperture of Canon lenses. But if I press the arrow up/down keys nothing happens. With a 4/3-lense I can control it with these buttons.

That camera is the BMMSC. It's the Studio, not the Cinema, camera.

The BMMCC has not yet shipped.

Have you checked the contacts are clean?
What Canon lens are you using?
Have you tried a different Canon lens?

Sorry, you're right: BMMSC ;)
I tried several lenses from Canon and Sigma, all in all 5 different lenses. With no lense I can controll the aperture.

Sounds like, the Cannon EF Speed Booster is going to need a,firmware upgrade for the Micro. However, the arrow buttons should have the same coo and as the Pocket Iris control arrows, or the Panny/aOly lenses would not work either, and they do,work. Make sure the auto exposure menu on the Mirco Studio is set for "Manual Trigger" to get correct Iris control with arrow buttons.

Installed the latest firmware for the Speedbooster today. Perhaps there'll be a new version for Micro Cinema/Studio soon.
The aperture setting is set to Manual trigger.

Have you tried the Speed Booster with a Pocket camera, to see if the Iris can be controlled on it? Worth trying to make sure it is,not a SP issue.

A friend of mine has a Pocket Camera and I lent him several of my lenses. He had no problems with aperture control.

OK, that is sorted. Drop a note to Metabones, let them know you are having this issue, so they can get started on a solution. Good luck.

Hi guys,

I know this was discussed a while back, did anyone find a solution?

I have recently purchased the BM Micro Cinema Camera with the BMPCC Metabones Speedbooster, and I'm not getting any aperture control on any of my Canon EF lenses. I've updated the firmware on both the speedbooster and the BMMCC (camera update 3.4), and I'm on the "manual trigger" option next to "auto exposure".

Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks,
Ed

Are your Canon EF lenses on the BM list of supported EF lenses? If not, they are not going to work.
Also, when you mount the SpeedBooster, make sure the lens release button is returning to its locked position, sometimes it sticks, and lens communication is not engaged.

Also, Try pushing the lens release button to see of the camera resets. Also, yiu must power off the camera before changing lenses on the SB, so the camera can reset communication with the lens (or press the lens release button to cycle the camera). But MFT camera makers recommend truning off the camera when changing lenses, which is always a good idea to protect the sensor too.

Hi Denny,

Thank you for your quick response. Yes I think the problem must be that the lens release button is not clicking back out when I put the SB on, so it is not engaged properly. Do you know how to solve this?

Thanks!

You need to contact Metabones for a new MFT mount. As the one you have is not seating correctly. They should ship you a new mount, you can swap out the existing one with. This should take care of the issue.

The first thing I look at when a lens is not communicating with the camera, is the locking button, which is also a Switch, also to make sure it is resetting the camera back on after changing a lens.
Cheers

This also happened to me. BMMCC software updated (2.9?). Speedbooster firmware updated. Have a sigma 18-35 on the speedbooster and I cannot change the iris from within the camera, or in the external speedbooster.

I'm also having the same problem. Can't change the iris with speedbooster OR camera on BMMCC with a BMPCC speedbooster.

I sent my speedbooster in for repair. That was over a month ago. Metabones customer service isn't great.

I was having this same problem. I noticed that the Speedbooster actually could be pushed slightly further AFTER the click. When I did this and then went back counter clockwise to the click, the lens motorised briefly and after that no problems.

PLEASE NOTE - I am not sure if this is the correct mounting procedure or a slight aberration in the manufacture of mine, so don't go forcing that thing unnecessarily...

Also, if you're having this problem, try connecting USB power to the speedbooster and using the speedbooster's aperture toggle. You can then at least determine that the speedbooster is alive and capable of adjusting aperture which is a small help in narrowing down the site of your problem.

Metabones replaced the unit and I haven't had any trouble since.
