EF Lens Compatibility List (Firmware 1.1)

With the new firmware now available I will no longer be maintaining this list.

Please visit the Firmware 1.2 list here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4651

So I've been doing a lot of testing with the camera and thought it might be useful to others to create a list of working and non working lenses. There are a few threads already but they all seem to have become derailed...

Here is my list. This is for Canon EF & EF-S or other brand EF mount lenses and all based on Firmware 1.1.

These have been tested so far (updated with CaptainHook's list):

You can add the Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM.

Not Canon, but the Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm F/1.4 works.

Cheers Nick added both to the list.

I presume the Zeiss is the ZE modle?

As the ZF and ZF.2's have manual apertures I've not added them to the list.

Getting my camera tomorrow. Will report back on Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS, Sigma 10mm f2.8 fisheye, Canon 24-70 f2.8L, Canon 28mm f2.8. And though it has been noted that the Tokina 11-16 works, I'll chime in on whether mine focuses to infinity or not.

Both my 70-200mm f4L (non-IS), and 50mm f1.2L work perfectly. The 24-70mm f2.8L doesn't.

Can confirm that BMCC iris control works with the Canon EF 28-135mm USM zoom.
This lens was sold as part of a Canon "kit" package with many 7D's.

Not great for video work due to front lens movement when zooming (matte box problem) and variable iris zoom thru.

But it is another compatible lens option that many may already have and could fulfill a particular setup needed.

Hoping for the upcoming firmware fix reported for the prime Canon 35mm/1.4 beauty to come soon..

The sigma 10mm f2.8 fisheye works. Waiting on my other lenses to come back from rental today to test them.

if anyone can confirm or deny the orange or blue lenses, i would appreciate it! If you have a particular lens (made by canon) not on the list, let me know as well.

I believe this is the 'kit lens' that comes with the lower end Canon DSLR's.. One came on my wife's Canon Xti.. and yes. it's plastic.. and about as low-end as canon makes them.. the 18-135 that came with my 60D isn't much better.. I rarely use it.. it's sharp.. but flat with no depth.. I'm sure you get pick these lenses up cheap.. but that's because they are cheap..

Nope, also the previous version of the 24-70mm f2.8. Strange how some do/don't for different people.

Hi Christine:

It would be very helpful if Blackmagic would make this thread a "sticky" at the top of the BMD forum, or perhaps include a list of EF lenses compatible with the BMCC in a FAQ on the website.

Similar to what Panasonic does on their site:
http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/d ... t/gh3.html

Cheers.

The Sigma 18-200mm f3,5-6,3 is working fine also.

And I can confirm for the Canon 100mm f2,8 Macro (not L, not IS), the Canon 70-200 f4 IS L and the Canon 300mm f4 IS L and the extender x1,4 vII.

I've discovered three interesting anomalies. For all of the following lenses, the BMCC will operate the iris but not the image stabilization function. These are my only I.S. enabled lenses, so it may be that my BMCC's I.S. compatability is dysfunctional. I see no reduction in hand movement nor do I hear the little gyro making adjustments. I tested all three lenses with the t2i and the I.S. works normally.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Autofocus Lens
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens

I wish I had one of the I.S. lenses that has been listed here, so I could determine if it's a problem with my specfic camera. If anybody has the lenses above, can you please test the I.S. feature?

Just tried my Canon 40mm F2.8 pancake lens. It seems to have the same issue with the BMCC as the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8. No infinity focus when wide open! It only goes up to about 700 meters, no further.

I also tried my Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm F/2.4 M42 Screw mount lens with an M42-EF adapter. Same thing, no infinity focus. It might be the adapter causing it though...

I think that's meant to be in the next firmware 1.2 update.

Maybe the BMCC really has a flange distance issue? My 24-105mm F/4.0 L IS lens is so far the only one that achieves infinity focus - because it focuses "further" than infinity on the BMCC.

The canon version of the Tokina 11-16 2.8 seems to have a different flange distance than the nikon version and looks like its not able to focus to infinity. Source:

It might also just be the Nikon to EF mount adapter "fixing" the issue. Why my Canon 40mm F2.8 lens cannot focus to infinity is a mystery to me though... :?

YES. Most adapters let lenses focus past infinity to make up for tolerance issues with the adapters.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens

I have the Canon 18-55 kit lens and the Sigma 17-50 OS you mentioned, and a BMCC. I too thought the IS wasn't working, but the manual has some information about the Image Stabilizer support on p15:

When using battery power, the camera will only activate the image stabilizer while recording as the lens draws additional power from the camera to operate the image stabilizer. When external power is connected to the camera, the image stabilizer will be active any time you set the lens' stabilizer switch to ON.

The upshot is that IS will not function unless you're recording, or you have external power connected.

So, I can confirm that the Sigma 17-50 works fine, including IS/OS.

These are my only I.S. enabled lenses, so it may be that my BMCC's I.S. compatability is dysfunctional. I see no reduction in hand movement nor do I hear the little gyro making adjustments. I tested all three lenses with the t2i and the I.S. works normally.

You're exactly right. I actually called BMD customer support yesterday and Eric discovered my problem. As soon as I hit record, the IS began working. All three lenses work just fine. I should have known it was my fault, not the camera's.

BTW - BMD has the best customer support I've ever experienced.

I will be also very interested in hearing from those of you who are running 1.2 beta or even BM to find out if any of the aperture no-working cited lenses have been addresses in the new firmware. In my case, I have 8 Canon mount lenses and only two are fully functional. I like to know if I should be looking for additional lenses or just ND until the upcoming update.

Just received a Canon EF 17-55 mm f/2.8 IS - works like a charm, with IS, iris and all.
Looks like a workhorse lens, if you need to go handheld run&gun.

Thanks Frank, I guess I going to have to go that route. Is just that already owned three L lenses covering that range. $4500 in lenses to covert 16 to 70 mm and still have to buy another lens if I want to change aperture.

Would you consider the 17-55 lens to be wide enough for using it as a standard lens.
I seems as I could need a wider angle.
What are your thoughts guys?

The Canon 17-55 F/2.8 lens, when used on the BMCC, is around 40-126mm in terms of 35mm still image film. It seems to be the best Standard to Tele range zoom lens option for the BMCC. It's next on my list. I just got the Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 lens, so the Canon 17-55 F/2.8 lens will make a nice addition to that.

Frank, does the 17-55mm lens have any issues with infinity focus?

No, infinity is fine - at least on the one I have.

I think that I would seldom need a wider lens, so yeah, I'm a happy camper so far,

Frank excuse my ignorance but did you ever post any experience or thoughts onthe Sigma 8-16MM?
I can't remember, if not has anyone used it on the EF Version of the BMCC?

If you have please post a link to some video,
Thanks
