We Killed the Blackmagic Cinema Camera (test & thoughts)

PostTue Jan 15, 2013 6:02 pm

Hi, everyone - I just completed my first camera test with the BMCC. It's a little nonsensical but it was fun to finally use the camera.

A couple of observations that echo many before me:

1) Don't trust the LCD screen: bright areas look super blown out on the screen (even when monitoring in video setting), only to see there is captured detail when you view in your NLE system. I set my LCD brightness below 50% to have a more accurate reading. Trust those zebras.

2) The detail is fantastic. Way more than my FS100 which had way more than my 60D

3) It looks like resolve has some complications with FCPX 10.0.6, so I just used a few custom curves in FCPX for this project. Looking forward to figuring out Resolve for the next project.

I'll post more soon at strappingproduction.com/blog.

Thanks for watching!

Thanks for posting this! this video was fun. .and looked really nice!

Let me ask you a few things..

1. Did you shoot this in raw or prores?

2. You mentioned Resolve had issues with FCPX, what were they?.. if you shot raw.. what was your workflow in FCPX?

Thanks!

Thanks, everyone!

Hi, Bill - I shot this is Prores. I wasn't able to get the clips to import but I'm realizing now I might have just been doing something wrong. Need to learn Resolve asap!

Hi, you mentioned you did custom curves with FCPX. Is that a plug in? FCPX does not have curves.
It would be great if you could share.

Thank you!

judging by looking at windows, there is enough light out there to make highlights clip, and we still can see the some detail in trees, my best guess is its raw.

Nice one Kyle. :-)

I'll second the comments about the LCD and Zebras.

Zebras are you best friend on this camera. If you keep your exposures clear of zebras the RAW file will have detail in the highlights.

Thanks, everyone! I actually filmed in prores this time around. I processed them with a few different curves in MBL. Not an ideal workflow but it worked okay.

Ha! Thanks so much, John! The vo actor took it upon himself to do that crude Australian accent. I'll do my best to feature a nasally charachature of an American accent in my next video to even the score.

Thanks for all sharing all of your bmcc expertise. It's been a huge help!

Ha! Thank you! My wife, sadly, has had to fake running mascara for me before. Need to start paying her.
