Metabones Speed Bosster 4/3 Coming in March

PostThu Jan 24, 2013 3:32 am

As you already know, the speed booster is promising to give a lot for less. Turning the BMCC into a S35mm is a big deal for me and a lot of you, no doubt. And Still, time is the factor that divide this pie.

Please forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong about this..

Will the Metabones Speed booster work on a passive MFT mount? I wouldn't think it would since there's no electronics to control the lens/adapter.

You will have to use lenses with full manual control such as the Samyang 35mm F1.4

I have been thinking about it. The speed booster include a electronic side that allow the communication with the lens. WIthout this electric communication it would be impossible to use IS of AF functions. Still, the light will pass through the adapter giving you the possibility to use any fully manual lens. I see it as using anamorphic adapters. manipulation the light without the necessity of communication between the lens or the camera. Not even Phillip think that the 4/3 speed booster will be a problem for the BMCC MTF mount. Still, we need to wait.

This also opens up the old manual Pentax SMC glass a lot more - I've been using this old glass on my Canon 600d since April last year and will keep using them with the BMC.

Cheap and fantastic 50mm f1.4 Pentax SMCs to an 80mm f1.0?

And also the great range of f2.8 primes in their 70's and 80's catalogue too become f1.8... I can see these becoming a little more scarce on eBay :)

(Yes, I know the F-stop doesn't actually change) :)

Probably not as the flange distance needs to be shorter for the current design to work.

I think I understand but people please correct me if I am wrong...

The Metabones Speed Booster works by shortening the distance between the lens and the sensor i.e. shortening the effective focal length of the lens. So EF on EF won't work because all the EF lenses would then focus their images before the sensor.

Likewise a Metabones Speed Booster for MFT on MFT mount won't work either.

The distance between the front of the MFT mount and the BMCC sensor is so short that a range of specific adaptors can be added to allow specific lenses to focus their images on the BMCC sensor. The Metabones Speed Booster is just another adaptor. So you could have EF to MFT Metabones Speed Booster, or Nikon to MFT Metabones Speed Booster etc.

It's lensed to concentrate the incoming light to a smaller footprint (thus increasing lumen per cm2), IIRC the FFD is unchanged.

The lens reduces and focuses the image circle to a smaller area. In doing so the flange focal distance (FFD) is shortened. So for it to work on an EF mount the lens would need to be able to get closer to the sensor. Which is not possible as the mount is fixed.

With Sony E and M43 mounts you would normally have an adaptor for EF (or other) lenses that is basically a tube to correct the FFD. That tube is now shorter on the Speedbooster so accommodate for the above.

All of this is detailed in the white paper on the Metabones site.

Would definitely buy a passive version of this adapter M4/3 to s35/APSC for Nikon F mount.

I agree completely. I have an array of old Nikon manual lenses I use on my D7000 and can't wait to test them out on my BMC. I think nikon glass will become a lot more popular with this adapter/camera combo purely because they are inexpensive and provide an aperture ring.

So if I have nikon glass, I use an adapter to MFT this should work with the speed booster? If so where and when can I give money for this.
