re-inserting footage into BMCC

PostThu Feb 04, 2016 3:26 am

I need some help guys.

I wish to create a VFX sequence originating from a HD JPEG that I want to re-insert into a BMCC so I can trace the general shapes on some acetate so I can shoot an actor against a greenscreen and have her in roughly the right proportions to the scale of the VFX. I can do this in either Fusion or After Effects. (I hope I have explained myself clearly)

What format do I render this VFX sequence into so I can add it to the SDD and see it in the BMCC viewfinder?

Or if there is a better way to do this, chime in.

I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to do, But if it is simply turning RAW .JPEG into DNG for viewing on the BMCC's screen?
then try Adobe DNG Converter https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/digital-negative.html
Not sure if this will work, but a .DNG is a DNG none the less.

please give us feed back either way.

Cheers

Thanks Daryl.

I'll give it a go.

What I wanted was to produce a line drawing on clear plastic that I would overlay the BMCC viewfinding screen so I could judge where to position my actress standing in front of a green screen so that she was in the correct proportion and orientation to the VFX plate.

I'll let you know if it works.

In that case why not shoot her in a "Full Shot" and scale/position as needed?
If it's shot on Green Screen you can put her any place you like after keying it!

From my previous attempts, DNG converted frames wont playback.

Try DNxHD or a flavor of ProRes instead.

Render out a ProRes 422 HQ or DNxHD at 1080p (make sure the frame rate matches what the BMCC can capture).

Hi Adam

Unfortunately I can't get it to work.

Just to be sure I'm doing the right thing, I'm rendering a DNxHD in both 10 bit and 8bit formats (185x and 185). Although I can see the files in the SSD in my computer they do not register in the camera.

Have you set the camera to DNxHD? If it is set to RAW you won't see the DNxHD.

I'd suggest doing it old school/brute force -- put the BMCC on a tripod, carefully align it, and then shoot the Fusion/AE screen. Once you've shot your footage, you can play it back and trace over an acetate.

Good luck.

Record a clip in camera in DNxHD. Check the setting of that file. Match them when you encode your test footage. Make sure there is an audio track (even if it's blank)

Then make sure the name of the file follows the naming convention of the files generated by the camera.

Once on the SSD make sure the camera is set to DNxHD.

This should work.
