video assist prores hq quality

PostTue Feb 09, 2016 11:01 pm

Hello everyone,

1. I use URSA Mini 4K to shoot ProRes 422 HQ 1080P internally.
2. I use Video Assist to record ProRes HQ 1080P in the SD card from URSA Mini 4K.

Do you think they produce the same quality of videos?

I know video asssit record 10bit 4:2:2. Does ursa mini 4k also record 10bit 4:2:2? or it is 12bit?

Thanks in advance.

ProRes 422 is a 10bit codec, so no you won't be getting 12bit if you shoot ProRes 422 1080p in camera.

To get 12 bit you'd need to shoot in RAW (or ProRes 4444 but I don't think the BMD cams have 4444, just 444 XQ).

ok,

ursa mini doesn't have 444 xq in the current firmware, maybe in the future
do you mean the 444 xq or raw will be 12 bit?

so the video assist should produce the same quality video with the ursa mini 4k, since they are both 10bit 422 hq?

thanks

If you want 12 bit, you'll need to shoot in RAW.

Theoretically, shooting 1080p ProRes 422 internally or to the video assist should yield almost the same image quality. However, I can't say for sure because I don't know exactly how each image pipeline is handled. It could be that the ProRes encoder in the camera does a slightly better job than the one in the video assist. That's getting down to a level of minutia with which I'm not familiar. For all intents and purposes though, they'll likely look identical.

thank you

i really hope ursa mini can do 1080p raw, 4k raw is too much for me.

I shoot prores 422 hq 1080p most of the time, i am thinking to use video assist to record the video, because sd card is cheaper, and i can get few cards to shoot outside all day.

thanks

I'm guessing that it won't, because that would require either windowing or subsampling to get there. I really don't see how that's a down side, because for most productions where 4K is worth the extra overhead, so is capturing in raw, and for everything else, ProRes HQ is already more than enough.

In-camera looks would make ProRes even more useful of course, but obviously there's no way of knowing whether or not that's coming, unless you're one of the folks actually working on it. :)

4k raw is awesome, but the huge file size is not very convenient for production and post-production, for my personal needs of course. it is not a downside for sure.

1080p raw will be a nice to have feature.

But to get HD raw, the camera would need to do a 1920x1080 window of the full 4K sensor. I do not think the URSA Mini 4K can do a widow mode, it only shoot the full sensor, and does a downscaling to get HD ProRes from the full sensor, which gives you a better Full HD recording in ProRes. Once you process the image to,get HD, you no longer hav a Raw file, which is basically unprocessed image.

Although not currently available, ProRes 444 XQ and ProRes 444 are both 12bit. All other flavours of ProRes are 10bit. The data rates for ProRes 444 XQ are almost as demanding as shooting raw:

ProRes 422 HQ 10bit ~ 110 MB/s @ 30 fps UHD
ProRes 444 12bit ~ 168 MB/s @ 30 fps UHD
ProRes 444 XQ 12bit ~ 250 MB/s @ 30 fps UHD
raw uncompressed 12bit ~300 MB/s @ 30 fps 4000x2160
NB: 'uncompressed' is lossless raw compressed 1.3-1.5x
