EF Lens Compatibility List (Firmware 1.2)

PostPosted: Thu Jan 31, 2013 9:20 am

As we now have Firmware 1.2 available I thought I'd start a new lenses list. I'll try keep it uptodate as other users post their results.

Firmware 1.2 adds f-stop display on the camera (among other things).

I found that, on my EF 17-40mm 1:4 L USM, while the camera is showing an f-stop change on screen when pressing the arrow buttons, that the aperture on the lens did not change.

Is there any difference between 1.1 and 1.2 in terms of lens compatibility?

Nothing listed on the firmware update page other than "Aperture display on compatible lenses".

As noted. The aperture is displayed for the 17-40mm 1:4 L and adjusts in camera but it does not adjust the actual aperture in the lens.

We have a bunch of the prime USM lenses from canon and the Tokina 11-16 DX.

With the new firmware we are still sitting with the same problems of:

28mm Canon USM = No aperture control, very soft wide open (this lens is great on the Canon 5D)
11-16 Tokina DX = Full aperture control, no infinity focus (this lens works on the Canon 5D just fine)

I guess we'll take this camera step by step and once all our wish lists are sorted this camera will be so much better than a great camera it already is. We are enjoying the images out of this camera.

We are filming this weekend for a short horror film all to be shot RAW. Steadicam, Crane, Dolly, maybe even some handheld shots to mix it up. We will post the final film once it's completed.

Thanks Blackmagic for the update, looking forward to the next update.

Cheers.

Weve got a lot of full body chroma key work coming up and seeing as our tokina 11-16 is looking misty at infinity, has anyone used the zeiss 15mm yet?

The canon 35/1.4L aperture now seems to work correctly where as on 1.1 it was hit or miss for me. This is apparently undocumented though as it's not in the read me.

[EDIT] Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM aperture control changes f-stop onscreen, but DOES NOT actually adjust iris.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM aperture control works fine. IS works like a dream, even handheld (using the BMC aluminum handles) at 300mm. It's still a pretty silly thing to do, though.

In regards to the Tokina 11 - 16 issue with infinity focus on the BMCC, I have noticed you can achieve infinity focus when zoomed in at 16mm. Maybe someone else can confirm if this is the case?

Question: Does Canon periodically issue firmware updates for their lenses? If so, are you and Randy running the same lens firmware version & BMCC firmware v1.2?

I'm interested in possibly getting a Canon EFS 10-22mm for my BMCC, so I'd love to know what's up with that combination. Cheers.

P.S.: This raises a related question: Is it possible to update Canon lens firmware if one doesn't own a Canon camera?

Bernie, I stand corrected... when I checked it before, I never actually took off the lens cap... I just observed the screen display change the f-stop number.

I just double-checked it, and you are correct... the actual exposure does not change, although the displayed f-stop does. My bad; I was just too eager to post. :-[

Well, that's grim... bit by the no-aperture-ring bug! I was counting on that wide angle, too... still useable with a ND, but...

am stuck using an old 50mm 1.8 as my wide as the L 17-40 and 18-135 doesn't work
think it's time to start saving for zeiss..

is there a chance of firmware fixing this issue ?

Hey funny thing is when you drop on a non working lens and hit iris, you get a flash movement in exposure then you can't do anything..

wonder if the lack of communication is solvable as it does seem to initially see the lens

I don't understand why some Canon EF lenses work and some don't.
Isn't there a standard protocol to follow?
How on earth can it differ?

Many hard questions this Saturday and I didn't even raise the one about the meaning of life.

I just upgraded to 1.2.

Zeiss Distagon T 3,5/18
Zeiss Distagon T 2/35
Zeiss Planar T 1,4/50

All work flawlessly. The f-stop shows up and control over aperture is fine. Love the lenses.

I also have a Zeiss/Contax 28mm 2.8 with a Leitax adapter that obviously doesn't show the f-stop and the iris button doesn't work. But it is a great lens. Still easy to use as you do get to see Zebras, the zoom focus and the focus assist outlines.

Now that's not what I wanted to hear!

Happy that yours is working ok but could do without it being a random issue.

Mine is not IS which is at least different to Bkdavill but if yours is the same model as mine then that's really boring.

It's working fine on my stills camera so isn't a fault with the lens.

Unfortunately, the Canon EFS 10-22 reportedly does not work. See:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4651&start=20

(Unless you're referring to some other "10-22"?)

Eli Hershko on the BMCuser.com forum reports that the Sigma 10-22 works for them on the BMCC-EF.

Very depressing. Look at Tokina 11-16 for a wide. Doesn't focus at infinity.
Should have waited for the micro 4/3. Too many Canon lens don't work.

jfro wrote:Should have waited for the micro 4/3. Too many Canon lens don't work.

It's still early days. Now that cameras are making it out to a wider audience we will see many reports of issues that need addressing. Even Metabones took a while to get their software on the Sony E to Canon EF Smart Adaptor to work on many EF lenses and that was the only thing their product needed to do.

If we keep this list up to date Blackmagic will know what lenses people are trying to use and are having issues with.

All the lenses I've tested that don't work, the BMCC has recognised what aperture range that lens is capable of (starting at the correct minimum and going up to the correct maximum). So the camera is seeing and communicating with the lens, it's just not getting the correct signal to the lens to make the electronics execute the change.
