I've been using the lens since the day I got my bmcc in November last year. I'm a macro guy. I use it ALL the time. I have no reason to lie. Maybe it's like the Tokina issue. Some are just a problem and some are fine. Though I would have no idea how to fix it.

Greetings ¿Have you tried these Macro lenses with your BMCC?

- Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro
- Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro
- Canon Macro Photo MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x
- Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro

I'm mainly curious about the MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x, and a bit of the EF 180mm f/3.5L. Thanks.

Hey Rafael,

The EF-S 60mm is great! I don't have the Canon 180mm, but I do have the Tamron 180mm. It's ok but I prefer to use the canon 100mm non-IS with kenko extension tubes. The kenko's are cheaper than the canon and, frankly, better. A friend of mine has the canon 180mm but I like my 100mm with the tubes a LOT more. The MP-E 65mm is a BEAST of a lens... but it can be very tricky. You focus by moving the camera into the focal plane. Wide open you literally have a couple of mm DOF at best. At f/16 you get almost an inch. It can take some getting use to. You need light and a nice micro adjustable head... but when you pull it off, oh man, it's for the ages!

Thank you very much hehe, I was wondering for a long time how did the MP-E 65mm perform with the BMCC. The MP-E 65mm is like a must for Macro shooting, If budget is good by these days I'll get that one along the EF 100mm and some tubes. Glad to know tha the EF-S 60mm works as well. Thanks again.

Its biiiig FAIL

There is nothing to say that is the case. Could just as easily be that the BMPC4K has ver 2 firmware that will get released with the BMPC4K is released. BM have stated on numerous occasions that they are working on the BMCC firmware.... Lets see what happens over the coming weeks.

Hi, if there is to say about this. You can read in the link that I leave, I ask where the person doing the test chamber.
The 85mm 1.2 L lens works perfectly on the BMCC 4K, which is not done in the BMCC 2.5K and tells me to believe that this is due to a new specification of the camera, says exactly ....

Hi Marco! Great work. Only one Question. The Canon 85mm 1.2L Full works on BMCC 4K? I have the 2.5K and dont work.....its the EF Mount. Thanx

OneRiver Media

Thanks, Juan! Yes, for the heck of it, I mounted the 85mm f/1.2L II on the BMPC as the very first lens when I first received the camera, and BAM it worked to my surprise! This was a huge thrill to me as that 85 is one of my very favorite all-time lenses, despite how much I despise its electronic focus control. It may very well be Canon's sharpest lens they sell, but I digress. So yes, it works perfectly and beautifully on the BMPC!
Juan Rojas

wow. Thanx i think in the next firmware they will add these new compatibilty lens to the 2.5. BMCC

A Couple Of Night Owls

From what i understand, some lenses have more sensitive power requirements so i think it's a function of new hardware in the 4K - don't quote me, but i don't think it can be fixed by firmware.

That was me replying on Marco's vid and as i said, from what i now know certain lenses not working are because of various sensitivities to power, so it's a hardware thing that's unlikely to be fixed in firmware unfortunately. Of course, this is far from the final word.. but just to put hopes in perspective.

But yes, i was super happy to see the 85/1.2L work too, since it seems to be one of the most power sensitive lenses out there (it's the only lens we have that doesn't fully work on my Redrock adapter) so it bodes well for other lenses - i forgot to mention it to Marco but he tested it straight away just as i did. :)

Also, hilarious that i asked not to be quoted on it, but then was. :D

Aperture works, it's the focus by wire that doesn't work so the lens isn't useful on it. If it was the other way round i could at least set aperture on 5D3 body or something.

If it's a hardware issue and not firmware, well that's a real bummer. I'm surprised Blackmagic has not put out a definitive list of compatible lenses, why some work and others don't, and even tried to fix some incompatibilities if it is fixable? Doesn't seem very prudent and supportive of a camera they designed for a specific lens system, not of their consumer base.

I see that the aperture isn't working for the 70-200/4L IS USM MK1... seem to have the same issue with the 70-200mm f4L USM (non-IS)

Also, we just updated our firmware to 1.6.1 as well, and the aperture on our Canon EF 24-70L stopped working as well.

It's the same with our BMCC 2,5k, after a FW-Update to 1.6.2 most Lenses are not working.
So the 24-70 2.8 L and our Tokina 28-70 2.8 that worked fine before is not able to adjust it's iris.

After downgrading to the old FW 1.4.2 there is no change to adjust the Iris. That have worked fine in 10-2013 with the same FW. It's so confusing!

Blackmagic Design, we need a solution ASAP!!!!

So the TOKINA SD 12-24 F4 (IF) DX has the same problem on my Cinema Camera EF mount - the aperture doesn't actually change though the iris says it changes.

I had one certain BMCC 2,5k from my rent partner several times end of last year (Nov/Dec). My Canon 17-40mm worked fine, now in May I had it again and the same lens don't work any more on the same camera

Now, the only lenses that are working is my Zeiss 85mm 1.4 and my Canon 24-105 4.0
What is not working are my 17-40mm (also not the one from my colleague), 24-70mm Version 1, and 70-200mm 2.8 IS, all Canon Originals

My testing results from last night with firmware 1.8:
Canon EF-S 15-85 is working, aperture changes, auto-iris works, autofocus works (worked also with 1.7)
Canon EF-S 10-22 is NOT working, aperture does not change (no change to previous, was not working with 1.7 either)

I second for the Canon EF-S 10-22, no aperture, no auto-iris, no auto-focus. I use it with a Tiffen variable ND but it would be cool if BM could look at this, it's not like non fisheye wide lens were so common on the market I could choose another one. And it's a Canon lens, supossed to be pretty standard in control...

On a more positive note, my Sigma 18-150 F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS work perfectly, IRIS, AUTO-IRIS, AUTO FOCUS (although real slow, but it seems to be the same with all lenses on the camera). Not the best lens in town, but pretty versatile and nice to use.

Both of mine 'work' but they both have a problem with aperture locking if you keep pressing the buttons once you're at the limits (2.8/22). This isn't directly related to the BMD cameras - happened on a RED Epic too and that camera gave me no feedback. The only way to fix it is to snap on another lens and then swap back to the L. It will reset to f2.8. Happens every time on both of my 24-70s.

Tamron 150-600mm used to work (no aperture control).

With v1.9 the camera won't power up properly - black screen, no image on EVF.

I recently purchased the lens TAMRON 70-200mm, f / 2.8 Di VC USD Canon mount. When installed on my BMPC 4K camera crashes and screen goes black. To unlock the camera must be turned off and remove the lens.
I do not understand how in a recent product such a thing can happen. I hope the firmware is revised solving this problem soon.

Tyson, far better to ask an idiotic question than to be an idiot like the rest of us. There's no sure relationship between an EF lens being compatible with an EF mount BMD camera and the Metabones Speed Boosters. However LensRental has been very helpful in attempting to determine lens compatibility on the MSB. This link has been posted elsewhere but this seems to be worth saying again:

Had anyone tried this? as from the lists here some Tamrons work and some don't...

Thanks for the link Rick. There's a lot of great info there, I'm glad you posted it. Unfortunately, it confirms that the Tamron 70-200mm VC won't work. Weird. I was thinking about getting rid of a few lenses and picking up the Tamron 24-70 VC and 70-200 VC to simplify things. For the money they seem like great lenses. Maybe the Metabones Ultra line will solve all my problems. Ha! :)
