On Firmware 1.2

NOT WORKING:
the Canon EF 17-40 F4 L (moves f-stop display on LCD but not the lens aperture)
Canon EF 20-35mm F3.5-4.5 (moves f-stop display on LCD but not the lens aperture)

WORKING:
Canon EF 50mm 1.8 Mark1
Sigma EF 30mm F1.4
Canon EF-S 18-135 (60D kit lens)

To the fine folks at Blackmagic design.. I REALLY would love for my 17-40 L lens to work on my BMCC I purchased this specifically for the BMCC..

Love,
Bill

Please, what about with this lens?:
Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Autofocus

Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM

I am interested in buying a zoom lens with wider range, they think of these? or you can recommend something similar?
Thanks in advanced.

Has anyone tested the following Canon kit lens yet:
EF-S 18-55, 3.5-5.6 IS II
It was my Canon 60D's kit lens and is the widest one I have, couldn't find it on the list.
(PS I know it's crappy, but I'll have to save a while before getting a good wider faster lens...)

Thank you!

Are all of you folks also checking the focus? It should achieve infinity or the lens isn't "compatible".

While I agree that the "Infinity Focus" issue for many lenses is a serious issue that must be figured out and fixed, let us remember that most of those lenses are still very usable on an awesome camera.

The hopefully temporary workaround is that you cannot go full wide at wide-open aperture. Example: our Tokina 11-16mm/2.8 is still very useful at 12-16mm at various stopped down iris settings.

Is it perfect? No. Do I want full capacity of these lenses? Absolutely and do expect it will get there once they figure it out. But would I return the camera - absolutely not.

Also keep in mind a few things; If you are shooting a narrative scene with camera or actor movement at wide open aperture, then you are beating up your focus puller unless you have a very expensive electronic system like a Bartell. Rarely would you use wide open in such a situation. And the sweet spot of most lenses is rarely, if ever, at wide-open iris. Realistically, the only time you want to be at wide open aperture is for a very shallow depth of field - where you don't want the background in focus; or you have very low light to work with.

But count me in for one of those hoping BM fixes this very soon. But let's not get crazy here.

has anyone tried any of the Rokinon/Walimex (Samyang) full manual EF mount lenses?

E.g. the 35mm/1.4 works great on my 7D but I am not sure about the BMCC...

I've used my Nikon primes. 135mm f/2.8, 105mm f/2DC, 85mm f/1.4 AD-D, 55mm f/1.2, 28mm f/2.8. All work fine with my Novoflex adaptor.

This thread is for electronic EF mount lenses tho.

I just go the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 non-VC and it works fine (iris and focus). I'm not entirely sure about infinity focus at 17mm f/2.8 (a bit soft but focus assist shows itself on very far objects). All good on all other focal lenghts, it goes beyond infinity.

I also have the Canon 100mm f/2. It works just fine.

Does anyone know where Black Magic stands with regards to getting some of these lenses working? I have an opportunity to get the Canon 10-22mm lens at a good price, but cannot live with the lack of iris control for long. I could suffer and work around it for a while, but I'd need to have some idea that it is actually going to get patched in an upcoming firmware.

Does anybody have any ideas? This is an official Canon EF piece of glass so I'd expect it follows protocol, but obviously something is off.

THanks,

Yes, some people have a V1 and it works fine, and there are others like me that it doesn't. No one seems to really know why but it must be that copies produced in a certain time period work, and others don't. The first post should probably be edited to reflect that there are mixed results for the 24-70/2.8L V1.

The BMCC doesn't feature auto focus. The Focus button toggles the peaking display on/off. Focus the lens manually.

I think I have just worked out the problem with the V1 24-70mm f2.8 L lens. It may be the contacts on the lens as I have just been messing around and have manged to get the iris control to work every time I power the camera up. The way it seems to work for me is to power the camera up, test the iris and if it's not working there appears to be a little bit of play in the mount so I gently twist the lens clockwise (when the lens is pointing away from me) and that seems to do the trick. I'm not keen on twisting the lens as I don't want to wear anything out but it seems to work at the moment.

I can add the Canon EF 50mm 2.5 Compact-Macro to the working lens list. It is not a speed demon, but at well under $300 this is an outstanding lens and according to Ken Rockwell (an independent reviewer on the web) "it is the sharpest and the least distorting of any Canon 50mm lens." and "It may not be expensive, but this is Canon's best 50mm lens optically."

Re: EF Lens Compatibility List (Firmware 1.2)

Read something interesting about the 85/1.2L :

Version 18 of the library introduces the ability to turn this function on or off
as a background process. In most cases lenses with image stabilization will already have
the function active without needing this command. In that case, image stabilization
should be turned on or off using the switch on the lens barrel. Lenses that use full-time
manual focus, such as the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM need to have this turned on or
they will not be able to be focused manually

I'm not sure if this only applies to the birger product, but at the moment i'm pretty sure IS on the BMCC only occurs during recording, so from what i can tell this might mean you won't be able to focus the 85/1.2L unless you're recording and IS is enabled by the camera. Seems BMD will have to at least change this to get that lens working if this does indeed apply beyond the birger product.

Canon EF 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM

Update: Aperture does work using L/R Arrows on camera display and Fstop number on display is correct. Just doesn't work with the VariZoom.

There is no manual Iris on this lens so I'm trying to use a VariZoom VZ-Rock LANC controller which has always worked well on my video rigs.
The focus control does work although it's kinda lumpy. No subtlety.
The f stop doesn't work at all. So there's no way to adjust the Iris? This is nuts.
I believe it.s ver. 1.2 because I see a purported iris value that seems to vary between 3.5 & 5.6 but I can't get an f16 no matter how much light I pump into it.
So it seems that the EF specification is only partially implemented and supported.
Anyone else?

You don't mention what lens.

As you'll see from the list on page 1 most EF lenses work however there are a handful that currently don't have aperture control. These all appear to be communicating correctly with the camera (the camera recognises the max and min aperture) but don't physically change the aperture.

Blackmagic are no doubt working on this for future updates. Even Metabones took a while to get a wide range of lenses to work on their smart adaptor (about 4 firmware revisions) and they only had lens communications to deal with.

Whitehorsevideo changed the "subject" in their post to the lens name: Canon EF 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM

I have a 17-40 f4 L and I can confirm it iris is not working the BMCC shows changes but the lens does not change from wide open, no matter where the iris is set in camera.

This is with the latest firmware.
