Question: Does Canon periodically issue firmware updates for their lenses? If so, are you and Randy running the same lens firmware version & BMCC firmware v1.2?

I'm interested in possibly getting a Canon EFS 10-22mm for my BMCC, so I'd love to know what's up with that combination. Cheers.

P.S.: This raises a related question: Is it possible to update Canon lens firmware if one doesn't own a Canon camera?

Bernie, I stand corrected... when I checked it before, I never actually took off the lens cap... I just observed the screen display change the f-stop number.

I just double-checked it, and you are correct... the actual exposure does not change, although the displayed f-stop does. My bad; I was just too eager to post. :-[

Well, that's grim... bit by the no-aperture-ring bug! I was counting on that wide angle, too... still useable with a ND, but...

Bugger was hoping there was a trick to get to work
am stuck using an old 50mm 1.8 as my wide as the L 17-40 and 18-135 doesn't work
think it's time to start saving for zeiss..

is there a chance of firmware fixing this issue ?

Hey funny thing is when you drop on a non working lens and hit iris, you get a flash movement in exposure then you can't do anything..

wonder if the lack of communication is solvable as it does seem to initially see the lens

I don't understand why some Canon EF lenses work and some don't.
Isn't there a standard protocol to follow?
How on earth can it differ?

Many hard questions this Saturday and I didn't even raise the one about the meaning of life.

I just upgraded to 1.2.

Zeiss Distagon T 3,5/18
Zeiss Distagon T 2/35
Zeiss Planar T 1,4/50

All work flawlessly. The f-stop shows up and control over aperture is fine. Love the lenses.

I also have a Zeiss/Contax 28mm 2.8 with a Leitax adapter that obviously doesn't show the f-stop and the iris button doesn't work. But it is a great lens. Still easy to use as you do get to see Zebras, the zoom focus and the focus assist outlines.

Strange the your 24-105/4 L is not working. Mine does, as do others.

Is your 24-70/2.8 L a MK1 or MK2?

Now that's not what I wanted to hear!

Happy that yours is working ok but could do without it being a random issue.

Mine is not IS which is at least different to Bkdavill but if yours is the same model as mine then that's really boring.

It's working fine on my stills camera so isn't a fault with the lens.

Unfortunately, the Canon EFS 10-22 reportedly does not work. See:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4651&start=20

(Unless you're referring to some other "10-22"?)

Eli Hershko on the BMCuser.com forum reports that the Sigma 10-22 works for them on the BMCC-EF.

I was hoping it was just some individual lenses out there that did not work but it seems to be a global issue.

I still don't understand why some lenses work and some don't.

I have a Canon L 16-35 f2.8 Version I that does not work. Fstop changes on screen, but iris doesn't change.

Very depressing. Look at Tokina 11-16 for a wide. Doesn't focus at infinity.

It's still early days. Now that cameras are making it out to a wider audience we will see many reports of issues that need addressing. Even Metabones took a while to get their software on the Sony E to Canon EF Smart Adaptor to work on many EF lenses and that was the only thing their product needed to do.

If we keep this list up to date Blackmagic will know what lenses people are trying to use and are having issues with.

All the lenses I've tested that don't work, the BMCC has recognised what aperture range that lens is capable of (starting at the correct minimum and going up to the correct maximum). So the camera is seeing and communicating with the lens, it's just not getting the correct signal to the lens to make the electronics execute the change.

On Firmware 1.2

NOT WORKING:
the Canon EF 17-40 F4 L (moves f-stop display on LCD but not the lens aperture)
Canon EF 20-35mm F3.5-4.5 (moves f-stop display on LCD but not the lens aperture)

WORKING:
Canon EF 50mm 1.8 Mark1
Sigma EF 30mm F1.4
Canon EF-S 18-135 (60D kit lens)

To the fine folks at Blackmagic design.. I REALLY would love for my 17-40 L lens to work on my BMCC I purchased this specifically for the BMCC..

Love,

While I agree that the "Infinity Focus" issue for many lenses is a serious issue that must be figured out and fixed, let us remember that most of those lenses are still very usable on an awesome camera.

The hopefully temporary workaround is that you cannot go full wide at wide-open aperture. Example: our Tokina 11-16mm/2.8 is still very useful at 12-16mm at various stopped down iris settings.

Is it perfect? No. Do I want full capacity of these lenses? Absolutely and do expect it will get there once they figure it out. But would I return the camera - absolutely not.

Also keep in mind a few things; If you are shooting a narrative scene with camera or actor movement at wide open aperture, then you are beating up your focus puller unless you have a very expensive electronic system like a Bartell. Rarely would you use wide open in such a situation. And the sweet spot of most lenses is rarely, if ever, at wide-open iris. Realistically, the only time you want to be at wide open aperture is for a very shallow depth of field - where you don't want the background in focus; or you have very low light to work with.

But count me in for one of those hoping BM fixes this very soon. But let's not get crazy here.
