Super Talent CFast 128gb URSA MINI 4k

PostFri May 13, 2016 1:08 am

Thought I would give everyone a heads up and state that the Super Talent CFast 128gb works great with the URSA Mini 4k. I would say that it is not fully compatible but it shot 120fps in ProRes great along with 48fps in 4k. I have yet to try RAW but for $75 this was a no brainer.

Got interested and looked around... they certainly are cheap!

http://www.supertalent.com/products/sd_ ... Fast%20Pro

According to them, their speeds are "Up to 480 MB/sec Read, up to 240MB/sec Write". Anyone remember the numbers of prores writes? They don't look optimal for best recording speeds, but Edward, could you run some tests in all flavors?

Super Talent CFast 128gb URSA MINI 4k

PostFri May 13, 2016 6:57 pm

Nick, up to 240MB/s will handle ProRes 422HQ DCI 4K/UHD 60 fps (1768Mbps and 1886Mbps respectively). It can also manage DCI 4K 24/25 fps in ProRes 444XQ.

Well that seems like a nice low cost solution for the UM4K

Nick,

Id gladly do some tests for you, but Rick is right on all accounts.

I am curious whether these would handle any of the codecs in the 4.6k Ursa Mini? For instance Prores 422 HQ in 2k at various speeds?
Rick, do you know the numbers off the top of your head? I see storage rates for 30fps on the tech specs sheet but not for higher speeds.
For a lot of work I like the downsampling from 2k and extra room for stabilizing but 4k is overkill. My colorist and I were discussing 4k and i dislike the look of faces in 4k...skin looks like a moonscape and I feel distracts from the storytelling. But for wide vistas with a lot of detail 4k can be put to good use.

Patrick, the numbers stated by Rick above apply to any camera. After the sensor captures the image and the image processor does its thing, a certain resolution in Prores of any flavor will weigh the same amount of space and will take the same amount of time to transfer, regardless of the sensor it came from.

thank you. I didn't understand that. I thought sensor size also added to data flow size. But what about at higher speeds? I can't seem to find the specs for data flows above 30fps?

It would be great to have some low cost option cfast cards for for working day shoots; For instance, I would never want to shoot a talking head interview in 4k

Yeah the framerate would change the numbers, and I don't have any of them... maybe Rick "wikipedia" Lang will be able to help here.
These cards could be a cool backup to have just in case.

They'll probably withstand 2K 30p without problems...

I would assume that would be a safe bet as well, with little risk of dropped frames. I will be curious to see what anyone purchasing one of these and running further tests might come up with. Just thinking ahead to when I eventually get the 4.6k camera. Not there yet.

Patrick, for which frame rates do you want me to provide data rates for ProRes 422 HQ? With firmware 4.0, you'll be able to record ProRes 2K, probably 2048x1080, and HD 1920x1080 if that's what you want.

ProRes 422 HQ 2K (2048x1080)
24p 201 Mbps 25 MB/s
25p 210 Mbps 26 MB/s
30p 251 Mbps 31 MB/s
50p 419 Mbps 52 MB/s
60p 503 Mbps 63 MB/s
120p 1005 Mbps 126 MB/s

If this isn't what you want, just let me know.

Apple's "ProRes White Paper" (PDF):
http://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs ... r_2013.pdf

Refer to the data rate tables beginning on page 21.

I am curious as to how the camera would preform with two of these cards in dual cfast mode. I may have to be the guinea pig for this one...

So these cards DO WORK?? They aren't technically Cfast 2.0.. When I first got Big URSA in 2014 I bought two of these cards and they didn't even work for 1080, it also seemed that they didn't properly fit too well in the card slot. When I tried formatting cards in camera they crashed the camera and forced a shut down. Same thing happened from my computer, no joke. My macbook crashed and forced a restart during formatting.

The 128gb version works fine at almost all resolutions and frame rates in ProRes LT. I shot alot of 120fps 1080p footage last weekend with it in ProRes LT without dropped frames.

Here are the times we got out of the 64gig card with no drop in frames at 24fps.

The Super Talent CFast card worked in 4k RAW? That's impressive

The Super Talent CFast 64gig card did get 4k Raw at 24fps.
But we have only done one test with it.
I am waiting for a 2nd card to come in to do more testing.
Going to try the dual card mode and 60fps.
I will say at 1080 I could not find anything wrong with the card yet.
Will be doing a lot of test once the 2nd cards gets here.
I will post results once I get them.

with a 64gig car getting only 5min of time will just not work for the long record times we need.

Have ordered a Atoch and will be testing that and posting results once we get that as well.
