Official "Look what I shot!" Thread

Hey Everyone!

Instead of creating a new thread for every music video/short film/"test"/etc. shot, lets make this the official "I shot this on my BMCC" thread.
That way, we can do away with all these scattered threads and see them all in one place.

I don't have my camera yet, but to start it off, I'll submit my favorite BMCC footage thus far:

Meanwhile, today I had an opportunity for the first time to shoot a few minutes of "test" footage with a BMCC generously loaned to me for a few days by Guy Cochran of DVeStore.com. (Thanks, Guy!)

The attached frame grabs are from BMCC ProRes files ("video" and "film") I shot today using my >45 yr. old Nikkor 85mm f1.8 prime lens.

Note: No post color correction or sharpening. The 1080p full-quality frames have been compressed down to about 350K for display here.

The BMCC was on a tripod alongside the camera I normally operate (my employer's FS100) for these recurring short-form infomercials which appear on KGW-TV. The BMCC isn't actually being used for the production; I just brought it along and set it up next to the FS100 to see what it would look & sound like. I don't have sample frames from the FS100, regrets.

It was interesting to see that the FS100 kit zoom lens was at about approx. 125mm @ f6.3 and +9 gain, and the BMCC was @ f4 ISO 800, with about the same framing and apparent exposure levels. All hot tungsten lights, with the BMCC set to 3200K WB.

No motion footage from me yet. I plan/hope to shoot a bunch of stuff over the next few days, including some RAW.

This was a good start, and now I have a better feeling for how the cam's zebras & audio features work.

I'm hoping that someone with a BMCC will post some footage using the BMCC's audio recording... I'd like to get a sense for how good it sounds.

I do plan on getting one as soon as I'm able, but I'm wondering whether I should stick to double system recording using my Zoom h4n and syncing in post, or use the BMCC's audio recording capabilities and run my mic into those via a pre-amp.

This is really amazing.. only now I realize that so much content shot on BMCC is available, Thanks Christine for putting all together.

Much obliged! It would be great to be able to use a single system for recording, but my shotgun mic (an Audio Technica 14" stereo model) requires phantom power. Its sound quality has turned out to exceed my expectations so I'm very happy with it, but to use it with the BMCC I'll have to plan for a preamp or mixer. That's not a big deal, but I'm just getting started as a cinematographer since I'm not done with school yet, so I'm on a limited budget

HOPEFULLY I'll be able to get one in time for our digital short film project... but that depends on both when my budget will allow it and how quickly BMD is able to catch up with preorders. Best case, it will be two weeks until I can put in an order, and we're scheduled to start production photography toward the end of March... it might be a bit tight, but I'm going to try!

I shot this video this past Friday using a BMCC generously on loan to me by Guy Cochran of http://www.DVeStore.com.

Recorded using BMCC ProRes 422 HQ in "video" (Rec.709) mode because I was curious to see what the BMCC's "low quality", ready-to-edit, 10-bit compressed recording mode looked like. I think it looks really good, and for example, far better in fact than what I typically can get out of my hacked GH2: The BMCC video has much better dynamic range, less noise, no gradient banding, more accurate color, vastly better audio, and to my eye the resolution looks better, too.

Interview lighting: Key light is a 2K Arri tungsten fresnel bashing through a white cotton bed sheet; the back/hair light is a 250w Mole tungsten fresnel through diffusion. A 48″ white bounce reflector is located just off-screen on the talent’s left (camera right).

Lenses: Wide shot: Nikkor 35/2, CU: Nikkor 85/1.8, both @ f4 (these are >45 yr. old lenses, via a Fotodiox "pro" adapter), ISO 800, WB preset = 3200K. The camera’s zebras were set at 100%. Exposure & lighting was adjusted so that a white card positioned in directly front of the talent’s face was just below clipping (e.g.: no zebras).

I've applied a piece of 3M anti-glare film to the BMCC's mirror-like touchscreen LCD to reduce reflections on the screen. The film works really well, although it reduces the apparent sharpness of the image on the LCD by a very slight amount. Doesn't seem to interfere with the touchscreen functionality. The film is easily removable (it's held in place by static cling), but is very difficult to apply without getting air bubbles between the film & the LCD. It took me a few tries to get a bubble-free result. Well worth the trouble though.

Audio: [Note: These audio settings were used with BMCC firmware v.1.2. Later firmware versions may require different settings. Always record your own tests to verify settings appropriate for your production & workflow.] Interview sound recorded in-camera using my Sennheiser ME64 cardiod mic on an overhead boom, and SoundDevices MixPre mixer (balanced line-level out). The MixPre provided phantom power to the mic. The BMCC audio settings I used were "line level", input level @ 85%, internal mic 0% (off). The result is super clean & full-sounding; close to noise free. Using these settings, when I record the MixPre's test tone, it plays at -18db in FCP7.

Hi. That looks great. I am also using final cut x and prores with the film setting. Do you find that your footage is super desaturated?

In order for me to get the colors semi right I have to have to corrections with both saturation at 100%.

Is that what you are doing?

Any help appreciated.

Hi Mike,

Yeah it is defo desaturated when you bring it in from shooting film log. To achieve what I did with this I pumped my overall saturation up to 100% and then just lifted the black saturation up a little.

I then used the exposure dials to drop blacks and bring mids up.

If your still struggling the best way is to work with Resolve and use a LUT. Once your footage is in the colour section of Resolve you can right click and add an LUT for Blackmagic to REC709. There are some tutorials and mentions from users about different setups for the Resolve settings.

I would rather stay in final cut x. Do you mostly keep your footage in final cut as well?

Yeah with my ProRes footage FCPX is preffered for most of my projects but I do use AVID at work and the situation is pretty much the same with the grading. Only really using Resolve for RAW and ProRes if I need a particular look.

This was my first day out with the camera and first stab at grading with resolve. Montage of downtown Ft. Lauderdale. It was the coldest day of the year at 59 degrees F.

I put some anti-glare film on the LCD and didn't have too many problems shooting in the sun today. The sun was incredibly bright which turned into a good camera test.

Bonus points: pick out the social and political messages of this self-indulgent montage piece:

Just a quick clip from a recording session. This footage will be worked into the full music video we will shoot this weekend. So in love with the Canon 50mm 1.4. Amazing depth and no low light issues at all. All I need now is a wider fast lens.

Shot on location at the beautiful "Le Jardin Bohémien" in Ghent, this was apparently the first short movie shot on a Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera in Belgium - it was certainly one of the funniest projects we worked on.

Wonderful compositions and juxtapositions of colour and clarity. That frozen blue ice looks good enough to eat. Great eye, Randy, and some of your music seemed influenced by bagpipes on the heath.
