Very Interesting. I liked the framing on the brown grass meadow shot with the lake in the background, and the new tree seedlings coming up through the dead grass. This makes you want to know what is going on with the ecology here!

Hello Everyone!

My film colleague and I have been following the BMD forum for quite some time, and I guess this is officially my first post. (Registered just moments ago!) I’m sure he’ll join in on the fun soon.

We’ve been fans of Blackmagic’s market disruption for a while, but we finally made the jump late last spring and purchased the Ursa Mini 4.6k, and have been over the moon with this camera as well as very glad to be a part of the Blackmagic Fam.

We actually just finalized an orchestra performance promo a couple days ago, which we shot mostly on the Ursa Mini, and yes, the client certainly loved it... I'd love to share it plus a couple previous ones, but I can't post links just yet I guess because of forum posting guidelines. It's all good, no worries.

Anyways, there's a lot of catching up to do.

Hi all.

I made a very small weekendproject and i called it "the one hour ultrashortmovie - challenge". So i had 1 hour of time to film, recording sounds, grade and cut the movie.

The story:
There is a small cottage with the rumor that there people disappear. The protagonist in the film wants to replace this rumor and runs nervously to this cottage ...

I used false color, and made sure that everything around the sun was well exposed, while I let the Sun over-expose. I then used Highlight recovery, because I shot RAW, and adjusted my highlights accordingly to recover the most highlight detail that I could. I only brought my shadow details up by about +15, and then let them fall into underexposure as the sun went down.

Yes, a very nice job Tim. Sunsets are not easy to film or photograph, and get a wide range of detail, as you achieved.

Thank you, Denny! Honestly, I think all credit belongs to Blackmagic Design for providing the tools. The URSA Mini 4.6K made it easy to expose the camera, and DaVinci Resolve made it easy to grade the image. I believe that the wide range of detail that I managed to capture is a enough proof that this camera has incredible latitude.

I even had a friend on Facebook asking how I achieved it since they're a photographer with a Canon DSLR, and they couldn't figure out how I avoided exposure change flicker. The thing is that the exposure remained the same throughout, and that this is all dynamic range.

I'm positive that if DxO was to evaluate the camera they would find it has a higher grade than any of the Canon DSLRs. It would hold up to the RED Dragon, which they did evaluate. DxO doesn't evaluate any other cinema camera, and yet because they made the exception for the RED it has allowed RED to boast that they achieved the highest DxO marks of any camera. Yet, I say that doesn't matter if they don't compare it against other cinema cameras. I'd love to see how the URSA Mini 4.6K compares against RED, ARRI, Sony, and Canon cinema cameras. I'm positive it would hold up to the big boys that cost 10X the amount of money.

Tim, your friend experiencing the "exposure change flicker"? He's doing it wrong.

There's nothing outwardly remarkable about that sunset shot. God's doing all the pretty work. Your job as a cinematographer is to know how to shoot it well...and you did. I bet Tim could shoot any sunset and make it look nice without being too hot or too dark because he's a professional and knows his tools. Consistency is what really separates the professionals from the guys who just put their camera on auto and wonder why the exposure changes rapidly on their sunset timelapses.

I was reading a review the other day about a new Fuji camera and the author wrote how the ISO button wasn't for him since he just likes to use Auto ISO all the time. I stopped reading after that. It's ok to use Aperture or Shutter Priority modes sometimes, but the only way to become one with your camera is to be confident while using it completely manually.

Cheers, Tim. That sunset shot is beautiful. Don't sell yourself short that it was the camera that deserves the most credit. Give that camera to someone who doesn't know what they're doing or isn't confident with themselves or their tools and see how well they do. No, Tim. You shot that sunset right. You keep shooting those sunsets right. That's some good work right there.

We just uploaded this project couple weeks ago. It's an interactive orchestral composition geared towards children, and this video is the main featurette from the few pieces of content we delivered.

The audio was recorded through their auditorium mics and most of the shots were filmed on the Ursa Mini 4.6k. Edited in Premiere and graded in Davinci.

Very nice! I've yet to play with the timelapse mode on our Ursa as we usually do all our timelapse on stills cameras but this makes me wanna try it out .

Love shooting over moving water also. Some cool effects can be achieved and played with. Great job!

We shot this on the pre 4.0 firmware at UHD with Canon Glass. Mostly between the 24-105 L series and the 70-200 2.8 lens. Our B camera was our faithful Canon 5D mark ii which we used a few times in the piece. Darian did a great job in matching the two and cutting together this really fun project for our client.

Glad you liked it and enjoyed the story as well.

I had the sudden urge to exercise my colour grading skills, because I haven't been too happy with them recently. Instead of shooting new footage for this purpose, I went back and re-graded a shot, I had previously given a quick LUT and an adjustment only, because it was just a test shot for another scene. So I went ahead and gave it a proper grade - one I can live with now. But I still have a lot to learn.

Previous quick and dirty LUT-job (1080p):



Proper grade I am more happy with (4K):

My 14 year old son shot, wrote and directed this short film on his BMCC 2.5k. Graded in Resolve. Main lens was
Sigma 10-20 f3.5.

Wanted to share this piece we created for a local non-profit organization that provides an athletics program for special needs kids and families in the central florida area. Shot entirely on the Ursa Mini 4.6k, between the Canon 24-105L series f4 lens and the Tokina 11-16 2.8 lens using the SLR Magic Vari-ND filter.

Camera movement was achieved on sticks and the Rhino CG slider kit all manual. Interviews were shot at UHD and the footage is a mix between UHD and 1080 with varying frame rates. All shot on ProRes and delivered in a 1080p deliverable. Audio was recorded via lav mics into the xlr on camera. Pre 4.0 firmware.

With all the tech aside I do hope you enjoy the images, story and context of "Buddy Ball" A look at the Central Florida Bambino Buddy Ball Baseball League.

I'll be travelling again soon and so I shot a quick test video today. I mean to test the URSA Mini and all my lens options as much as possible before we leave as well as trying to find the settings that complement my style of color grading the most. I still have to find a way to minimise the weight I'll be carrying with me. So there you go.

Hello Black magicians ! Here is my new show reel, almost entirely shot with the Ursa Mini 4,6K and the big one, but few shots are with the Arri Alexa, and the 5D mark III, Will you be able to see which ones ?

This is a test commercial for POST Fruity Pebbles cereal. It was shot on an URSA Mini 4.6k at 120 fps with a 15 degree shutter in windowed sensor mode at 2k RAW using a XEEN 35mm. This is a test commercial I did as a collaboration with my photography student Ian Bianco for POST Fruity Pebbles cereal. He wanted to do a cereal and milk pour and splash so we did it! After some trial and error and lots of cleanup in-between takes, I think we got one that worked!
