URSA Mini external audio unusable after 3.3 firmware update

PostMon Jun 20, 2016 11:51 am

Hello everyone.

The audio inputs on my Ursa Mini 4k are not usable after the lastest firmware update "Blackmagic Camera 3.3”.
The camera makes a lot of noise when the inputs are set to XLR even if no cables are connected to the inputs.
I tried turning phantom power on and off, mic settings to line, mic low and mic high and the camera produces a loud noise when switching settings.
Is anyone else having similar issues?
I'm having to use an external audio recorder with the camera now, as the camera audio is unusable.

Have you tried going back to firmware 3.2 just to rule out a hardware problem?

My camera had a hardware issue that was unaffected by firmware changes, so BMD is sending me a new camera body.

Yes, just downgraded to Camera 3.2 and the problem persists.
It looks like their firmware update broke my camera hardware.

No problems here, just did some interviews - they all sound the same as before the update

It is highly unlikely (basically impossible) for a firmware change to damage hardware, especially a camera firmware update that only is applied to its main processor board. Sounds more like, your camera incurred a hardware issue at the same time you did e update. There have been no ther reports of any audio issues resulting from firmware update 3.3, as Frank said, his camera worked just fine. I would contact BM Support to have this issue looked at.

I had a similar problem just after I updated to 3.2, but it only affected the "Mic high " setting, which is now only producing noise.
The same issue happened to someone else before. He got his camera replaced.

Did the issue to away when you downgraded to the previous firmware? I can see a firmware causing a hardware issue like audio, which is firmware controlled, but it should reverse itself when the firmware is rolled back to the previous version.

I've found several threads on this forum with people complaining about this issue. It is a real thing. Both of our EF's and PL have this issue and our freshly "repaired" EF came back to us with the same exact problem. Not a whole lot of hope that there actually is fix at this point.

Yes, the UM are having an audio issue, but I do not think it is firmware related problem. I think it is a completely different issue, as some cameras are having similar audio issue regardless of the firmware release, and before 3.3 was even released.

Has anyone found a solution for this issue other than having the camera replaced?
I tried upgrading to the new 3.4 firmware and the problem persists.

Pedro's, sounds like a hardware issue, rather than a software one. You may need to RMA the camera for repair by BM.
