Question about RAW workflow

PostThu Jun 30, 2016 5:13 pm

Hi !

I've tried raw mode on the BMMCC

But when I'm looking to a sequence in resolve (12.5) my dng appear as still images and not as a video sequence.

I was following that tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kpg0k3aD088

But raw stuff don't show up as video sequence.

What am I doing wrong ?

Thanks

In Resolve, when you are on the Media page, and browse the folders of your clips you should see them in grid view (thumbnails) or list view. You can audition clips by selecting them, they then appear in the viewer to the right. Press the play butting and the clip should play.

Select the clips you want and add those clips to your media pool. Once in your media pool you can move to the Edit page and add the clips to a timeline.

If you are only seeing still frames it could be that your clips have dropped frames. Check the folder with your clips. Each clip should be a folder containing a sequence of single frames. Check the sequence numbers of those frames if they are not sequential you have dropped frames. They should be xx00000.dng, xx00001.dng, xx00002.dng, etc

thanks for your answer Adam

If I browse my BMMCC folder, off course I can play the clips I have done in Prores.

Inside the general folder I have a raw folder and if I select this one nothing appears in the viewer.

Checking the folder the numbers of my still are sequential. I can't see a missing number

(sorry i'm french, I hope my english is clear)

Nicolas you should check the ... button in the Media Browser window and deselect "Show Individual Frames" option.

Thanks Andrew it was a good tip but... the "show individual frames" was not selected. And after double checking, I still can't read my raw material as a video clip

I will try to record one more time, just to see

Question about RAW workflow

PostFri Jul 01, 2016 4:04 pm

Nicolas, in Resolve/Media when you are pointing to the folder containing all the CinemaDNG folders, did you grab one of the media clip images that represents a CinemaDNG folder that contains the DNG frames (if you see an image, not just another folder) and drag that into the Source viewer? Then hit the Source viewer's Play arrow?

I wasn't sure if you were seeing only folders within the general folder or saw hundreds of images where you should see one image representing the single clip.

He shouldnt see that folder. Because it should look like a clip. If Nicolas see the folder with dng sequence then that sequence can be broken or has a missing or 0 bytes frame as Adam said before.

You're right, Andrew. If he only sees folders, something is wrong with the contents of that folder. I'll correct my post.

Sorry guys.

I've tried again and then noticied that the card sign was warning something. So I guess it's a card issue.
I don't see any dropped frames but my card is not fitting the BMMCC

Many things to check when discovering a new camera ! And I'm still wondering if the BMMCC was a good choice for me, that's why I'm a bit nerveous

thanks for your advice.

Nicolas, what is the full name of the card you were using? You said the ProRes files were playable. What frame rate did you use to shoot raw? Is it possible the card is not approved for raw recording at the frame rate you selected?

Unfortunately that SD card is not on the list of approved cards in the Cinema Camera manual on page 13/14. It's also not on the list of approved cards for the Video Assist but it's close, however those cards are only specified for ProRes recording via the Video Assist:

It is important to use high speed UHS-1 SD cards. These are some SD cards which we have tested using ProRes HQ.

The following SD cards will record at a maximum of 1080p60 and are recommended when using HFS+ or exFAT:

SanDisk Extreme Pro 16GB SDSDXP-016G-A46
SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDSDXP-032G-A46
SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB SDSDXP-064G-A46
SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDSDXP-128G-A46
SanDisk Extreme Pro 256GB SDSDXP-256G-A46
SanDisk Extreme Pro 512GB SDSDXP-512G-A46
The following SD cards will record at a maximum of 1080i60 using HFS+ or exFAT:

Lexar Professional SD XC 600x 128GB
DelkinDevices 633x 8GB
The following SD cards will record at a maximum of NTSC using HFS+ or exFAT:

SanDisk Ultra SD HC 8GB
SanDisk SD HC 8GB
Transcend SD HC 8GB
