Filming at the beach / around sand?

PostSun Feb 10, 2013 6:17 pm

What are your rules for filming at the beach? Okay as long as it's not windy? I don't remember reading about this in the official instruction manual. I don't suppose putting an air filter over the intake vent is a good idea. Can we get input from blackmagic on this?

No Rules, Just shoot, If the wind is extreme shut it down!
What is it with you people? Who are frightened to risk a $3k camera?

Try shooting with a $32k camera, Just remember,
for $3K you can shoot $3k times the risk and at a tenth the cost.
Not Sure about the BMCC but Most Camera fans are Exhaust (Remove Heat) fans not intake.

Just shoot, stop worrying!

Quite apart from the a fact that if there's a fan exhausting there must be an intake somewhere to satisfy a tiny in convince known as the laws of physics, there are Pleanty of people who can less afford the loss of a $3k camera than many who operate $32k cameras could afford to lose theirs.

Hell if someone I employed could have taken reasonable precautions to prevent damage and didn't because its only 3k, then they'd be answering some tricky questions.

You know what... it's as simple as knowing what your are doing, I'm not telling you to shoot in Sandy conditions, nor am I telling you not to have a Grocery Store plastic bag to protect your camera from rain or sand, But it seems obvious many of you need someone to hold your hand while you shoot.

Now get busy shooting, or get busy complaining about it.

I ask because I was just on a shoot with a C100 and the owner warned me not to shoot at the beach with it. The intake vent is on the side on that camera. To many of us a $3000 camera is a $32000 camera though.

And I'm not telling you how or what you should and should not do with any camera,
But for the most part you should not worry about shooting at the beach,
I and many, many others shoot at the beach regularly without any worry,
Just keep all your gear off the sand, I use a my water proof backpack and plenty of moving blankets when shooting at the beach, I also keep plastic trash bags and rubber bands handy for a quick raincoat, I would never let my camera or gear get sand on it.

Anyway you can't be fearful of any location or weather conditions, just be prepared and ready for any weather anomaly, Rain, Wind, Snow etc.

Your the only one who's mentioned fear....

Part of being prepared involves checking with others who are more experienced than you, even if its only in that very specialised area. This is exactly what the OP was doing.

That the OP coming here to ask isn't motivated out of fear, its out of a desire to be properly prepared, a process that when coming across a new situation only an idiot wouldn't use every resource available to them if there is time. this site is one of those resources.

Wasting every bodies time by withholding useful advice (even if it seems obvious to you, some of the brightest minds in the world still miss such things) and telling people not to worry about something so cheap (despite not knowing what cheap is to them) is not helpful. This is after all an ideal place to look up shooting tips for a BMCC.

If I had £1 for every time I've told someone more experienced than me in an area something they already knew but had overlooked then I'd be an epic user not a scarlet user.

The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask.

You have indeed now given some useful tips.

I shot with the BMCC at a beach in snow, rain and high winds and all I had to do after the shoot was clean it with some compressed air and a soft brush.

I'm australian and we shoot at beaches all the time.
simple prep and rules, Shade, a big umbrella for a small shoot to cover camera or a pop up for a work shoot, try to keep the gear off the sand but tripod legs or a high hat are fine as they have to be washed in fresh water after the shoot. Also stick all monitors etc on appleboxes. If you stick rental legs in saltwater you usually void the insurance.
Camera rain wind cover, plastic bag etc, beach sand is usually no problem unless the wind is strong, desert fine dust gets in everywhere and you need to tape and bag the camera / monitors.
I am presuming a hot summer beach day 35c so bring water unless your from england where you might need a jacket.

We used a DIY shrink wrap idea to help us against the 22mph winds and rain/dust that was kicking up at on our shoot, easy method hehe

i just finished filming on the beach and a mountain top which was very windy and sandy in Spain and once i was done i used an air speed blower to blow the vent area of the camera just for safe sakes and seems ok so far no issues and still using it back in London .
