Any experience with BMPCC and B+W XS-Pro Digital ND Vario?

PostTue Jul 19, 2016 10:49 am

Hi

At the moment I use a Schneider 77mm True-Match Vari-ND Filter. I love this filter, but for my small lenses (pana 14mm, 42.5mm and pana leica 25mm Sigma 19, 30 and 60mm) it is very big. I also have the pana 20mm, but I hate the poor manual focus. That is why I would like to get sometimes smaller to bring the BMPCC with me in a small package when needed. The big 77mm also draws peoples attention..

B+W has a 58mm filter. It only has 5 stops so I might need and additional 58mm ND and an IR cut. I have several lenses with 58mm threads, would they also be able to use the 58mm ND various or it would give vignettes?

I'm asking to decide if I just should get a smaller B+W for my small lenses and use the 77mm for my larger lenses (12-35mm pans, 35-100mm pana and 17.5 voigtlander).

Hi, I had the same issue, and got the B&W 58mm VND, which works very well on lenses having 58mm or smaller filter rings (I use step,up,rings to go from the 46mm on the Panny Leica to 58mm for the VND). I also got a 58mm .6 IRND or pair with the VND, to add IR blocking and a little extra ND for outdoors. Since you are using MFT lenses on a S16 size sensor, you will not get any vignetting from stacking two filters.

I had an old Contax rubber shade with a 58mm thread, I add to the top to get a "still camera" look when I was using the Pocket camera in "stealth" mode. Also carrying around the smaller filters reduces the weight you have to carry.
Cheers

You could try the SLR Magic Variable ND mk II.

They make one with a 62mm thread. The quality of the filtration is excellent.

After trying various vario nd's I settled one B+W XS-Pro vario ND's due to their lack of flare from the multi coating and no image softening with longer lenses. You can extend the density range by prizing the 2 halves apart and removing a pin although you have to be careful you don't go too far otherwise the 'X' pattern will appear.

Does the SLR Magic cut IR as well?

The SLR Magic Vari-ND II attenuates infrared to the same degree as visible light as I understand it, it is not an IR Cut. Most times that may be sufficient. Many modern IRND filters behave in a similar manner and do not cut infrared, but reduce it. If you test and find it’s not sufficient, you can add a matte box rectangular IR cut or screw-on IR Cut filter. I often find it sufficient but on some synthetic material, typically black nylon, an IR Cut does a better job.
