Many thanks to Grant Petty!

PostThu Jul 21, 2016 12:36 am

I would like to personally thank Grant Petty for two things.

1. Making the pocket cinema camera which shoots raw.
2. Making Davinci Resolve lite free.

Honestly, the fact that I can get the experience shooting in a raw workflow with a high end grading solution for so little money is really amazing. It means I don't have to worry about how much time I invest in learning some obscure abandon-ware that no one uses at the high end.

Thank you Grant Petty - it was very big of you to make Davinci Resolve Lite available for free!

The is the first real piece I've used complex power windows and qualifiers. (Boy it was a baptism by fire. I almost cried later when I heard that Shift-F takes you full screen to edit your power windows. lol)

I've ordered my micro cinema camera! Looking forward to that 60P :)

Nice piece, Dwayne. Only complaint is that it about 119 minutes too short! Could you fix that, please?

Very nice job. I couldn't agree more about the combo of the Pocket and Resolve. It is a remarkable set of tools. Add to it the Metabones Speed Booster and some nice EF cine lenses for the ability to create even more cinematic splendor. It's a beautiful thing. I agree with Rick! Let's see the feature!

Many, many thanks guys for the comments! You're too kind :)

Yes, she's very stunning. She was great to work with and had to deal with sand in her eyes from the strong winds! She really was a real trooper! I knew that the worst case scenario - I still have a great looking model - so that would save the shoot either way!

As far as the feature...One day! hahah. I'll get there!

The good news is I have another model lined up for another shoot in a few weeks! So I'll post that once I've finished!

Is there a homage to Tarkovsky there in the laundry fluttering in the breeze?

I see Canon finally came out with the camera everyone has been waiting for today, only it's $28k and out of the reach of most of us. I like the thread title and would extend it to all the team at BMD.

Hey Paul :) Thanks a lot!

Ohh, I'll be honest I don't know who Tarkovsky is! Educate me!

Still blown away by the combination of RAW shooting with Davinci resolve grading. I have to learn new techniques for each new shoot I do. But it's so worth it!

I'm back guys!

Here's my latest piece featuring the elegant Shannon Nendick!

Shot on the BMMCC at 60fps @ 180 degree shutter. I prefer the cadence of 180 at 60p. I did try 360 degrees, but with quicker motions, there was just too much blur I felt.

Spent a lot of time power window-ing the eyes and teeth on everything except 2 shots. But it was worth it, because she has amazing eyes!

(only 1 min again. Sorry Rick!)

I dont mean to be a party pooper, and I do like the overall grade here, but her eyes look really bloodshot from the red tint and the saturation. I think the whites need to be cleaned up a bit? Her teeth too on a couple shots.

Hey guys,

Finished another piece featuring Caia McKenzie who is both stunning and a very talented artist.

Beauty creating beauty. :D What a combination! Haha.

Again all shot on the micro cinema camera. Can't get enough of that 60p action. Actually the last shot looks like 120fps and when I was playing back I was thinking, "hang on. Is someone messing with my head? The micro cinema doesn't do 120fps."

Turns out Caia moves so gracefully that it just appears like that! Haha

Oh hey Rick! Haha I hadn't thought about that a doco on Caia. There's another project of mine that she's in, as a supporting role. Just finished some ADR with the main actress the other night. It's my first foray into narrative, although it's more of a scene test if anything.

Hope to publish that soon!

It’s been a while!

I realise I hadn’t posted the “narrative” project. I couldn’t get the audio to where I wanted it, so I put a track behind it. Worked nicely I think.

Sorry for the spam, but there’s another few projects I’ve put here too! All shot on the Micro. Man it does alright that little camera!

I wanted to create a follow up to MJ Sinclair's first piece, as she would get asked by friends and colleagues, "Where's part 2?" Lol.

So this time I wanted to experiment filming inside a car, but with a really barebones setup. Just my Micro Cinema handheld on a bag on my lap. I used a dracast LED light, double diffused with 216 film which I placed in the instrument panel.

I was going for a high contrast, downside to camera and it was a happy accident that the position of the light in the instrument panel, afforded me a nice fall off on her left cheek. Still not 100% downside, but the jawline has a nice shadow, particularily when she turns her face toward camera a little.

As always I exposed at ISO200 to keep noise low. No noise reduction at all on this. Added some sharpening and then output at Ultra HD to fight youtube compression as much as possible.

Here’s another project that I finished with MJ Sinclair again.

I lit this with 2 x 2K tungsten fresnels from outside the window.

Didn’t get the exact amount of exposure I was looking for in the wide, so I had some noise. But I purchased Resolve Studio and used the noise reduction, which worked real well!

Just finished another project!

This time I was working with a child. Filmed again on the micro cinema camera in raw 3:1 at 50fps, so that I could transition between normal speed and half speed.

Resolve’s motion blur section is great! Could dial in some subtle motion blur on some shots!

Really cranked up the “Color” slider in the raw settings to bring more colours into the shadows as that was important to get as rich a look as possible. Used resolve studio’s noise reduction which was just amazing to milk as much quality out of this as possible.

I used a single 2K fresnel outside the window, removed tinted glass louvres and had a small 150w desk softbox inside on some shots. Of course generous amounts of haze.

Very nice Dwane, I like your lighting and being slightly understated, natural look.

Thanks Denny!

Next time I might add some more in-room lighting to augment.

More experimentation is needed!

Not a bad idea, the goal is to look natural, while having enough light in the right places to create the effect you want.

I think that would enhance the treatment of your subject as if the room was lit from two sides from two or three sources. I’m sure you like the feeling more daylight would bring to her.

Yeah one thought was to do a soft top light that is so common these days. To give that nice soft cap on the hair. Just ran out of time to rig it, but I think that’s going to be the next step. And to use some more rim lights to separate her from the background better.

Also for the closeup’s it would have been nice to have a little more exposure and softness on the skin and a stronger bigger eye light.

Not sure if this will be everyone's cup of Tea - and I understand it's just a loose connection to Film Noir. But I guess I was going for a dramatic look in this piece.

Shot on the Micro Cinema Camera in Raw. There's a 2K with Full CTB pushing through the window right. Then a 150w Dedo Softbox on a jury rigged menace arm above. A small dray cast LED with a 'covered wagon' of 216 as the eyesight. I really wanted to have just a pin light in her eyes.

Kinda scary under-exposing the skin. I discovered Temporal noise reduction is mind blowing. Slows the machine right down, but boy it's doing things I didn't think possible with noise reduction. It was mainly for backgrounds, but it just left my subject without artefacts. Jaw dropping stuff.

Like 100% gone on noise...all of a sudden the background looks like a still image...because the noise is eliminated...boggles my mind...

Nice to see you doing something completely different. With almost no light on the subject, but that interesting treatment of the background, I was often drawn through the background expecting some awful and threatening to emerge from there.

There is an argument that some noise is needed to emulate film grain which seems appropriate for an homage to film noir. The controls with temporal noise reduction allow you to dial in any amount you want or none. Keep ‘em coming, Dwane.

Yeah I totally agree about the film noise. I think maybe I could add the film grain as another pass. But yeah, being able to go from zero noise and just blend it in - is amazing.

Many thanks Rick!

This is probably my most abstract project to date. As you can tell I have discovered the 'mirror' effect in Resolve. lol. Really pushing the resolution of the micro cinema camera in this with the zooms. And I also edited this in DCI Scope 2048x858 2.39 ratio. It doesn't sound like much different to 1920, but it really does stretch the camera's resolution. So 4K is beginning to make more sense for me.

Anyway, Nicole Gallagher is such a gorgeous woman. It was a pleasure working with her.

Very flattering lighting and the camera loves Nicole. Keep this up and we’re going to remember that guy that used to post here occasionally and now he’s shooting for Vogue.

Haha thanks Rick! So I had a 12 x 12 frame setup above with 1/2 silent grid cloth. When it’s ocercast it’s almost like a triple diffusion. Then a poly bounce below her for fill and eyelight.

Overcast weather, the cinematographer’s friend for lighting closeups.

Ah,It's been a while!

But I've finally managed to finish another Beauty Reel. This was lit 100% with 5 x Yongnuo YN360II lights.

Shot on the Micro Cinema Camera at 60fps (No flicker).

I rigged frames with 216 diffusion for the Key and the Top Light.

I will post a lighting diagram in the next post.
