Take the plunge. Black magic haven't tested cards since the Ursa launch

So i bought 2 cards and shot some today. at 4.6k raw 4:1 at 60fps I get the dropped frames detected alert. I guess they are not as fast as they advertise?

Single. Does that make a difference?

Dual card recording may work. Worth trying since you have the cards. The data rate for dual card recording is half the data rate for single card recording. My guess is it will work.

Delkin cfast cards 256gb for $287

PostSat Aug 13, 2016 5:28 pm

All the odd raw DNG frames are on one card eg. 0001 and 0003, the even frames on the other card eg. 0000 and 0002. When you mount the card in your card reader on the computer, copy the folders from card 1 to your computer and then copy the content of the identically named folders from card 2. So the content of the folders on your computer will include all the frames: 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, etc.

It's actually easier and faster than it sounds. And if you need to hand the files over to someone else, you simply copy the folder that has the combined files onto whatever medium or upload you want. But if you need the absolute fastest turnaround, like for a news feed in slow motion, this method is definitely slower than a single card capture. It all depends on the nature of the commercial work your doing if the dual card method for slow motion is practical.

Frank, were you able to test the cards at 60p with dual card recording? When I first received my Wise 3400x cards, I ran through every available combination of codec and frame rate to tests their limits. The only time I needed to go dual card recording was the expected raw open gate on the URSA Mini 4.6 K camera. It took an hour or two as you want to run each test for several minutes to be confident it will work in any situation. Worth the time with every new card acquired before being used on a shoot.

Try switching cards, you might have a card issue?

If both your card slots are working and both your cards are working and the Blackmagic Speed Test is reasonably accurate, then in dual card recording that slow 189 MB/s on a single card achieves a total throughput of 378 MB/s, so you will have success with most of the raw recording options.

Are these cards MLC or SLC type? The MLC cards are cheaper and has slower write. They seem to do well up to 4K Raw 3:1 or 4:1 30 fps (no drop frames). Some of them have controllers that you'll be able to write 4K Raw 3:1 or 4:1 dual mode > 30fps without drop frames. In my experience with using MLC type CFast (of course they are not on the approve list), Raw 4K 1:1 and Prores 444XQ are the ones that are dropping frames on MLC cards.

The manufacturer should have a detailed description of the cards including whether or not they are SLC or MLC, but I can almost guarantee they are MLC.

Since you own a pair, just record a scene like tree leaves moving in the breeze, with every combination of codec and frame rates and look for the flashing red drop frame indicators. When raw fails, turn on dual recording and try again. I hope both of your card slots are functioning all right.

Less than a week, i have 30 days thru B&H but a straight return would put me back on the waiting list.

A RMA to BM is about a 1-2 week turnaround normally, if the camera can be "fixed", may be a loose wire, easy fix. I would do a RMA to BM and send it in, will be faster than B&H, since they do not have it in stock, but you could call a B&H supervisor and ask how fast they would take to send a new camera?.

Sometimes a retailer will hold a few cameras in stock, but not for sale, so they can handle issues during their "no questions asked" return period. You might get one of them.

I got 2 Delkin Devices 256gb 4k C-fast 2.0 cards. Both cards max out at 250mb/s write, not the 495mb/s claimed. 3:1 4.6k raw at 29.97fps is the highest rate\compression I could go without dropping frames. The Delkin cards would not be picked up in the second slot(with firmware 4.0), but the transcend card I have could. Perhaps a firmware update would allow the card to be picked up.

Returned both, as ursa mini didnt recognise them in slot b, very slow. They are cheap... If ur wanting cards to record at low res settings they are fine... But they feel cheap are slow and arent worth the savings.
