4.0 LUTs to Share Network

PostTue Aug 16, 2016 8:23 pm

I'm curious if anyone wants to create a place for many of us to share LUTs we use for the URSA Mini on 4.0? I think we should differential between the 4K and 4.6K sensor. What do you think?

Tim, we can just use this thread to post links to our DropBox or other shared storage if you like. Or someone create a new thread without the actual firmware version in the thread name since the LUTs will be useful in future firmware releases too. A thread for each camera/sensor probably makes sense. Share LUTS URSA4K and Share LUTS URSA46K?

Sounds good to me. I was actually going to post a zip file of close to 20 LUTs I've been working on for the 4.6k. None of the LUT packages that I've purchased over the last couple of years seem to have updated their film emulations to the 4.6k sensor. The LUTs I'm working on are the result of grades I'm developing for a short film I'm producing and I'd like to see how they work for other filmmakers and the way they shoot and edit and get feedback on how they could be improved.

100% agree that none of the LUT packages i've used (aside from a new one) have really helped lock in the specific look i 'should' be getting.

I really like the feedback so far!

Yes, I do think that we should have two categories:
    • LUTS URSA 4K
    • LUTS URSA 4.6K
For now Drop Box may be a good solution. However, I like Robert's suggestion of hosting them on his server. I do think we do want a dedicated server. A little later today I can work on my website to create a page for me to share the LUTs I've created.

On Facebook someone inquired about OSIRIS LUTs because they had an issue getting the 5.8 MB LUT on to the URSA Mini. I have a solution, but I wouldn't share those LUTs because they are a paid LUT.

I think LUT Creation should be detailed somewhere accessible to the public. Especially for purchased LUT packages.

I also have the IMPULZ LUTs that haven't been updated for the 4.6K sensor. That saddens me based on the price for that package. The OSIRIS LUTs work better because they were for a general LOG look.

Oh right, sorry. Okay so you're going to need to follow these steps:

1) Load some 4.6K (or 4K) footage into Resolve. ProRes or RAW. As long as it's LOG.
2) In Color Page apply OSIRIS LUT to a second node.
3) In the first node make fine tuned adjustments to ensure that the LUT looks good. Highlights, shadows, mids are the primary adjustments here.
4) In the Clip Timeline right click on the clip, and select Generate 3D LUT (CUBE).
5) Choose location to save the LUT, make sure it's a local folder where you're storing all LUTs you want to copy to the CFast card.
6) Give it a custom name, or the same name as the OSIRIS LUT. Save.
7) Navigate to that folder, find the exported LUT, and adjust the name to remove the clip name information.
8) Load that LUT on to the CFast 2.0 Card into the 3DLUTs Folder.

The rest is exactly the same for every other LUT load on the URSA Mini with 4.0 firmware.

I hope this helps. I've got M31 and Vision X on my URSA Mini.

Oh, and for anyone using ImpulZ LUTs I found that LOG Generic works best for the 4.6K footage right now. They don't have a specific one for the 4.6K sensor, but I found LOG Generic to be the most pleasing solution until they come up with a profile for the 4.6K sensor.

Aaah okay, I just have to generate it again through Resolve and not simply load the original in camera.

I've been trying to load 3 of the Impulz LUTs and they're not working. Did you have to regenerate them in Resolve? I know Hook said they have to be 33^3, and the Impulz LUTs are 32^

I haven't tried ImpulZ LUTs within the URSA Mini yet. I took some time to find which one worked best with 4.6K LOG footage in Resolve. I don't use ImpulZ too often. However, it's sometimes great for a client that doesn't want to pay a ton for color grading.

I'll do a ImpulZ LUT to URSA Mini test. However, it might be the same procedure as with the OSIRIS LUTs where you generate it again through Resolve. I'll let you know.

In regards to ImpulZ LUTs, yes you need to regenerate them in Resolve to use them on the URSA Mini.

Thanks Tim! Just purchased Cineplus KinoLUT and was having the same problem (:
When you say "1) Load some 4.6K (or 4K) footage into Resolve. ProRes or RAW. As long as it's LOG."
I'm assuming you mean shot in 'film' mode... (pretty much BMD-LOG)

I also think its a great idea to share LUTs but also wondering about the paid versions? But sharing user created LUTs would be wonderful :D
Perhaps also some subcategories for cinema, colour correction, film emulation etc etc?

John, yes I mean "Film" mode.

And yes, we should not be sharing paid versions. Only share user created ones.

For the 4.6K? If so, what are you looking for from a LUT? A "look" LUT or a different starting point or something else?

Hi,

Made a simple forum to upload LUTs.

To discuss or upload a LUT - register. Upload the lut directly to the forum.
No need for external links. 10Gbps and plenty of disk ;)

Else, just download the lut you want as guest.

Feedback goes to me via this forum (BMD) since I will not be moderating heavily on the other address.
Please use PM here for feedback or problems.

Forum is empty so help out making it grow. Keep it to legal LUTs.
Any complaints from authors will render removal of LUT.

Describe it properly. If it grows, I will get it's own domain.

https://lut.holck.se/

I didn't put any effort into this so if it will just be idle - I'll remove it later on.

note.
I have only added BMD forum section. If someone feels like uploading LUTS for other cameras, let me know and I'll add forums for those cameras as well.

I really like the BTS as well. I use your vibe lut a lot for the other cameras. Do you have anything you consistently use on the 4.6k?

The 4.6k is a dream and already very easy to grade but maybe just a different starting point for creative sake.

I'm interested in LUTs for the 4.6K. Yes, a "look" LUT. Would you have a couple of different looks you would be willing to share?

What I would really love is a less harsh version of the BMD to video LUT for monitoring purposes. Something less contrasty, saturated, but more importantly something with more headroom in the highlights. The current LUT burns the highlights so quick you can end up under exposing if you're not careful.

LUTs are nice, and are OK to send to a director/producer monitor, but as a cameraman, I want to see the flat film log so I can see how my highlights and shadow details are being recorded. On BM cameras, you only need to set color balance close, and do final color grade I post. I find I get more accurate exposure results this way.

Elnarvideo on the BMC user forum has developed a LUT to address the same concern. Here is a post with a link to the LUT:
"Yesterday 11:52 AM Report Post
Hey guys. If anyone is interested I created a LUT that has more contrast and saturation than Film mode but still preserves all the details in highlights and shadows. Additionally I desaturated the shadows part of the image to achieve clean blacks. Thats how they do it on big films If you load it into your Ursa Mini, you can have a much better preview image than the default Rec709 LUT.

P.S. LUT is for Mini 4.6K not for 4K

https://www.dropbox.com/s/r42u789tx9...dSat.cube?dl=0"

But this LUT is still a work in progress so an update is coming:
"I actually just had a real life shoot where I used the LUT and it works well for daytime scenes, but for inside stuff it is a little too dark in the shadows and a bit oversaturated. Let me make a new one that would work better.

It should work in DaVinci though, it is made in it. You need to put it in the LUTs folder in DaVinci's directory."

Here's my current LUT: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0smrt5mnaz3uu ... e.zip?dl=0

It's a simple one to just adjust highs, mids, and lows so that I'm looking at a pleasing image. No color shifts. I pull back the highlights and bring up the shadows, and still crush the blacks. I have a curves adjustment that is close to the standard S-Curve that I would usually apply to images.

The main purpose of this LUT for me is to retain my highlight details so that I can see what I'm capturing there, and also retain as much shadow detail as possible. Yet, there is still details that are captured no seen in the LUT.

If anyone wants any other LUTs let me know. I'm still fine tuning my various LUTs. I like where I have my Black & White one at the moment. My 70s Vibe one is also pretty nice.

One LUT I'm working on is a Dream LUT. However, that's not ready to share by any means as I'm still perfecting it.

Hello,

I am sharing my favourite Mini 4.6K LUT with you. It will push your shadows into teal while keeping blacks clean und will warm up highlights by still keeping skin tones in check. It works well for high and low key situations and is great to judge exposure.

Hi,

you have to activate the new LUT by tapping the check mark on the lower left. Otherwise you are not changing to a different LUT.

I really like this LUT, thanks!

I like what it does to the reds and greens.

Maybe we should be posing a sample jpg with the LUTs to give an idea what it does. What do you think, Troy?

good idea rick. Maybe we have someone shoot a shot that is the goto clip we apply the LUT too so it keeps all factors the same?

Yes, that is a great idea!

I'm tied up until this weekend, but will post some images then.

Here is the 1st one. Shot on Ursa Mini 4.6k on Sigma 50-100 I wanted to find something that had a good amount of color as well as skin tones.

I'll continue to upload more in the posts below.
