Tokina Cine 35, 50, 85 T1.5 prime and new zoom

PostFri Sep 09, 2016 12:54 am

Well more to consider in the growing list of new Cine lenses this year, this time from Tokina:

In the past, Tokina has been criticized for lens breathing. Addressing that concern was a primary design goal. Take a look at the sample video.

Interesting Rick, but the SLR APOs still look like a better deal.

And the APO are smaller and lighter at T2.1 which is important to me.

Tokina Cine 35, 50, 85 T1.5 prime and new zoom

Duclos Lenses is the first dealer (in the world?) to have the new Tokina Cinema Vista prime lenses for sale now. 35mm $4,999, 50mm $4,999, 85mm $4,499. Virtual zero breathing to put that issue to rest!

Silvio, yes, the Sony CineAlta are very good value when purchasing the complete set. I didn't go that route partially due the one-time cost of purchasing the complete set at the attractive discounted price which I couldn't afford.

At the prices for the Tokina Cinema Vista primes, I never expect to be able to purchase those, but I posted here because Tokina continues to up its game with ever improving products.

I'm currently using the SLR Magic APO primes (25, 50, 85mm) and plan to continue adding to the set. A 32mm APO is expected to be the next prime released this year with other focal lengths to follow. It takes me several months to save for each lens, so the slow release of APO primes isn't really a problem for me. And for my needs, the set I have now is fine for most exterior shots, but I'm really looking forward to having a wider lens such as an 18mm to help manage tight interiors. By the time I complete the APO family, there are many alternatives in hindsight I could have for comparable cost, possibly even including a PL mount parfocal zoom. But the path I'm on is the one that suits my ways and means.

Rick, did you set them up indoors for a focus test to see if the focus distance scale (witness marks) are the same for all three lenses now?

Tokina primes looking quite fine in Phil Holland's capable hands mounted on the Red Weapon 8K VV:

WOW! Those lenses are nice. I watched the video in 4K and they looked very sharp and nicely balanced. I was very impressed. As soon as they have a 24mm or 25mm I'd consider these lenses for a production.

What I really like about Tokina have fast cinema prime lenses is that you can then get their cinema zoom lenses and have color matching across them. At least that is the hope.

Damn, I want them :D
Still waiting for the release of the Tokina Cine T3 16-28 Mark II.
For my type of work the zooms are better suited... but the new primes look really nice.

Tokina Cine 35, 50, 85 T1.5 prime and new zoom

PostTue Jan 24, 2017 9:28 pm

Tim, from NewsShooter at IBC 2016:

"To make things even more exciting, Tokina has said that they’ve got an 18mm and 25mm T1.5 coming later in 2017, also covering full-frame."

My guess is the 25mm could be shown as early as NAB 2017 and available by IBC 2017.

Of course, I could say the same thing about the next SLR Magic APO primes, the new 32mm and 18mm, but I'm very glad I have the APO 25mm and 50mm now as I think I'll use those more than 32mm and 18mm at least for the next year or two. Phil Holland was using the 35mm on the 8K VistaVision and that angle of view is very attractive to my eye, but the 25mm on the 4.6K sensor is very close to that angle.

Looking forward seeing some sample footage from you, Paul!
For my type of work I can't justify those primes - I have to go with the zooms for faster turn around.

I know what you mean Robert.
I have wanted a fast 85 for a while and this one has such a beautiful image.
I'm forgoing the 35 and lower primes and sticking with the Sigma 18-35 for its versatility and quality.

I will be using Rokinon 24, 35, 50, 85mm T1.5 Cine DS lenses and one Rokinon 14mm T3.1 Cine DS lens for a project next month on original URSA v2 and Ursa mini pro. I have only herd good words about them except when with ISO wide open you lose bit of sharpness. Any of you used them? And if so what did you think of them?

Johannes, if you can make changes in your lens lineup, consider the faster and better 16mm that covers Super 35. The 24mm will be your weakest lens and may not be useful if you plan to shoot at the faster apertures.
