4K@30fps & 1080P@96fps

PostMon Feb 25, 2013 11:05 pm

Aptina sensors:

At MWC this week the imaging company has unveiled two new image sensors for use in next-generation mobile phones. They promise to capture 4K video at 30fps, or if you just want bog standard 1080p video, you can enjoy capture at up to 96fps.

No pre-order... and soon available :-)

There’s a 12MP and 13MP sensor carrying the names AR1230 and AR1330, respectively. Both use Aptina’s 3rd-generation A-PixHS tech and 4th-gen MobileHDR tech, meaning very good quality low light image and video capture as well as built-in high-dynamic range. Aptina has also started using 1.1 micron pixel technology, allowing for the existing form factor to be kept while increasing the quality of the images being captured.

Clean sensors :-)

Hope that NAB 2013 won't have another "more than 1 year pre-order product"

It's all in the codec. A 1080 12bit raw sequence will still look way better graded than a 4k 60fps h.264. That's why there's so much hype about the BMCC.

Lol, a mobile phone sensor that does 4k @ 30fps, and you expect it to be good quality. There's a physical element to image sensors you know. And I'd rather have 12bit 720p before a mini sensor that's packed with 12-13 million pixels at 8bit depth. And that's before considering the compression that gets done to that image.

I imagine you are quoting some statement by Aptina when you say they have started using a [smaller] 1.1 micron pixel... While increasing the quality of the images.

A smaller pixel will allow them to cram more pixels into the same size of sensor but normally smaller pixels are going to decrease the image quality because there are simply less photons to be captured per pixel. By comparison the BMCC is a hefty 6.5 microns which compares favourably with more expensive cameras. In Aptina's case, the saying "less is more" may not truly apply.

and again...for the record...the BMCC was NOT a 1 year pre-order. It was 3 months. The camera was supposed to ship in July.

Please stick to facts when you post.

Yes, thanks for your lights about this simple news!

I just like to dream to better or just available sensor to work with :-)

Fatcs were nice from March to July...but shipping was cancelled!
6 months later the facts were: MTF annouced from October and shipping for Decemeber...but shipping was cancelled!

Sean, I let you stick to your facts if you can work with the BMC EF & MFT!
I just stick with my reality, still working with my 5D & 7D!
I have to keep 2500$ available, I stick to this fact since July...and I'm not alone!

Shipping was never canceled... it was delayed due to technical issues that needed to be investigated and resolved.

Do you see any other manufacturer shipping a camera shooting RAW and ProRes for £2k??? The fact is Blackmagic is shipping BMCC.
