Suggest which lens to buy for my BMCC

PostTue Jan 17, 2017 6:19 pm

Hi all,
I've just bought a BMCC 2.5k which, after what seems a firmware failure that I really hope to solve, I need to buy a good all-rounder lens.

I want to be able to shoot in a style similar to Perfume Genius' "Queen" music video, if that makes any sense.

Any suggestions?

Which lens mount? The Sigma 18-35 is a good all round lens on EF (or MFT w/Speed Booster).

How about these four, which one would you choose if you could just use one lens for everything? I don't need extremely wide shots though

Samyang/ Rokinon T2.2 Ciné DS 16mm
Samyang/ Rokinon 35mm f:1.5
Tokina 11-16
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8

It would be great if anyone could look at Perfume Genius' "Queen" music video and help me find out the right lens for shooting in that style (sorry for the noob question)

@Edward

Multiple lenses were used on the Perfume Genius Video, at a quick glance I would say some type of 16-35mm. There isn't a ton of depth , so that pretty much rules out primes. if your looking for a all-a-round lens for the BMPCC it really doesn't exist, if you wanted a camera that could do everything a fixed lens style would have been better. However, I Find with my ursa mini I can get most of my run and gun jobs done with the 16-35mm canon 2.8L

I have a BMCC and a URSA Mini 4.6k.

For the BMCC I was using the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 XR DiII SP (without OIS) a lot. It is a good and very cheap lens. Nice to have an almost 3x zoom.
For wide shots on the BMCC I have the Sigma 8-16mm 4.5-5.6 and for Close-Ups a Canon 85mm 1.8
This covers most of the needs. A good and faster alternative for the Sigma 8-16 would be the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8, if you do not need the 8mm wide angle. And it costs less than the Sigma.

17mm on BMCC behaves like 27mm on the UM46k, while 50mm is like 80mm.
8mm ... like 13mm
11mm ... like 18mm
16mm ... like 26mm

If I'd have to choose to have only one lens for the BMCC then I'd take the Tamron 17-50 (non VC, because it is sharper).
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I have a BMCC 2.5k EF, not a BMPCC ;)

Would you choose that over the Sigma 18-35 and Tokina 11-16?

Also, I really like the first few seconds of this video, which was shot with a Tokina 11-16 and a Rokinon 35mm. Can you guess which one was used in the beginning?

Edward, yes I would choose the Tamron over the others as the first lens to buy. It is a bargain and the high zoom range is very useful. And if your budget allows a second lens, I would choose the Tokina 11-16. Those two together cost almost the same as the Sigma alone. Otherwise the Sigma is a great lens.
I have all of them and more.

I would not go for any of the Rokinon in the range of 10/12/14/16/24/35 because the Tokina 11-16 does everything what the 10/12/14 do and is just a bit slower than the 16mm. And the Sigma 18-35 does everything what the Rokinon 16/24/35 do - and is not much slower than the 24/35mm.

With just two lenses you can replace 6 Rokinon lenses.

In the beginning of the video they used the Tokina 11-16mm.

+1

A good set for the BMDCC:

Tokina 11-17
Sigma 18-35
Tamron 28-75

If you can afford it, I'd also recommend a good fast prime at around 22mm, which is the "normal" focal length for the BMDCC. Something at f/2.8 or lower.

Either the Zeiss Z or Zeiss Contax 28mm f/2.0 on the Metabones Speed Booster will give you a great "normal" FOV prime lens -- and it's magical with an excellent IQ.

Thanks for the explanation, I will definitely check the Tamron out

So I've checked used prices and this is what I found:

£145 TAMRON 17-55 NON VC
£200 TOKINA 11-16
£390 SIGMA 18-35

The Tamron still wins? Or not? This will be my only lens for a while...

Why not buy the Tamron AND the Tokina used? Or is your budget that restrained?
If yes, then buy the Tamron only.

The 17mm will give you a nice standard angle and at the 50mm it will act like a portrait lens.

I think I'd prefer the 11-16 range for that sort of work on the BMCC, so the Tokina f/2.8 gets my vote from the choices presented. Of course, I think you're doing this completely backwards, but that wouldn't be the beginning of an appropriate response to the OT. Carry on.

I think it depends on what the OP is p,naming in shooting. There is no "one lens fits all" options. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages.

I agree: there certainly is not.

For a project such as the one mentioned by the OP, I'd use a very wide, fast lens for that camera. If I had any say I'd probably ask for a bare-bones Arri Amira + Cooke Panchro kit. Something tells me the actual music video was shot on a Red Something with 135 format SLR lenses, probably Nikon or Zeiss.

Thanks Jason, I have not seen the "Queen..." musical video, so did not know what the OP was trying to achieve, other than shooting a music video. I agree, a Wide angle lens set up would be the way to go, keeps focusing issues to a minimum also.
Cheers

Jason, I just realized that I somehow had mixed up this music video with another one posted by someone else here on the forum. After watching the Perfume Genius video I'd agree with you that the Tokina 11-16 would be the lens to start when looking for this style.

So Edward, give the Tokina a go first. Then add the Tamron. Sorry that I got the videos mixed up.
