Bright Tangerine Revolvr Follow Focus extraordinaire

PostFri Feb 10, 2017 8:43 pm

A nice video from BT that helps explain why this thoroughly comprehensive follow focus took more than thirty months to perfect and bring to market.

Damn, just another cool thing to sink my money in.
Tuning my UM46k has become quite expensive lately.
Two 4x5.65 Schneider IRND Filters, Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom with all add-ons, larger v-mount batteries and fast charger, cheeseplates all around, variable baseplate with v-lock, handheld support, cine lenses, cfast cards, Chrosziel fluid zoom, Shogun Inferno and now this...

I should put Rick onto my ignore list ;)

Kill Rick, but don't you love that Chrosziel Fluid Zoom control? Only drawback is that when I mount it on my focus gear, I can't focus from infinity to minimum focus distance, but realistically, it's not been a problem, because I don't rack focus through the full travel. What I like, is the muscle memory eventually kicks in so you get the feel for where to focus just by the changing position of your hand. That's helpful when following action.

I'm leaning to the NiSi Nano 4x5.65" IRND filters though, I'm leaning so far the bough is about to break. Then down will come Ricardo, camera and all.

Rick, the Chrosziel Fluid Zoom is the best, it's true. Absolutely fantastic. You can grab it by the lever.
From this day on it is Chrosziel first. Chrosziel first.
Made in Germany.
BTW the BT Revolr is made in Germany, too :D

Robert, I assumed it was from the UK; let's face it, some of the very best camera gear comes from Germany. At the risk of starting an international incident, I hope you agree that Canada produces some of the very best maple syrup! Vive la difference!

Rick, the Germans do not only produce some of the finest camera gear, but also some of the best hardware tools. For mounting and unmounting my rig I bought an Allen key set from Wera (metric and imperial). It is such a delight to use those because they are made so precise with no danger to damage the Allen screw (like it happens with cheap tools all too easily).

I have never tried maple syrup - here in Austria it is not very common.

EDIT:
Links for the tools:
Wera L-Wrench Set Hex, metric
Wera Kraftform Kompakt Micro ESD Screwdriver Set

Ah, yes, you know I have a trustworthy Wera micro torque driver for changing my mounts and so on. Excellent.

William, I have chosen the SmallRig #1753 Universal Wedge Plate. But soon after I received it they took it out of their program.
https://www.cinegearpro.co.uk/products/ ... 8243028737

I found there is a problem with their v-lock plate which has the wrong height so it does not sit tight. The whole camera wobbles if forced defeating the purpose of such a construction. I have been in contact with SmallRig and provided them with feedback for a redesign. They are working on it, atm.

To further increase the connection between camera and universal wedge plate I have added a second SmallRig Arri dove tail clamp: https://www.amazon.com/SmallRig-Standar ... 01D2ET0KG/

The reason I wanted a universal base plate is that with the shoulder mount plate from BMD the distance between rods and optical axis was too short for my cine lenses with 114 mm diameter. Couldn't fit in below the lens things like follow focus and lens support. And I wanted to be able to quickly move the camera fore and back on the base plate.
What the SmallRig solution is missing is an adjustable height of the rods to optical axis distance.

For this the Zacuto Universal Base Plate or Zacuto VCT Pro Baseplate might be the better choice, but is also more expensive.

To expand on Robert's remarks about the 114mm outside dimension on his lenses, there's no issue on my 95mm APO lenses or my 110mm Fujinon lens using the Chrosziel Zoom Control as a follow focus.
