Viewfinders

PostSun Mar 03, 2013 3:39 am

Hi,

Looking forward to getting my blackmagic camera. I am still old fashion and love the use of a viewfinder. Are there any attachments being made I could buy?

If by "viewfinder" you mean a loupe for the built-in LCD: GRID now has one for the BMCC that looks very interesting, and is relatively inexpensive (contact them for details):

Just google "evf viewfinder." There are many manufacturers, including Zacuto and Cineroid.

That loupe from Muntz looks like an inexpensive solution for using the BMCC outdoors.. not quite as elegant as an EVF.. but looks like it would do the job and for under $200.!

Myself, I like the idea of the GRID BMCC loupe's magnetic mount (mentioned above), but I haven't used either the GRID or the Munz.

With Michael's feedback, it would make sense for Munz Machine to modify their design for at least allowing a nose cutout and they may have a winner.

I've got the DP4-EVF and i'm going to use it with the Atomos Connect, (Which i haven't gotten yet)

I chose this set up for two reasons.

1 Cost - together they're about $900. There's a discount code you can find online that'll make the DP4EVF $550 instead of $600. The Connect is $350. The Alphatron is $1395.

2 Output - You can output HDMI from the DP4 and SDI from the connect. The Alphatron will only pass through sdi to sdi or hdmi to hdmi or convert hdmi to sdi. Not both. (Please correct me if i'm wrong)

Btw, i know someone will point out that the connect will not fit into the dp4 battery plate. There is a mod that will make it work. Just takes a chainsaw and a steady hand. ;)

I received an email from IndiPro Tools and they are working on a converter for their very affordable EVF so it will work on the BMCC.. I'm looking forward to see what they come up with!

Just saw that Kinotehnik's LCDVFE evf now has an sdi/hdmi converter option that looks easy to mount. Kinotehnik seems like a good company. I got to play with the evf briefly at Filmtools and it looks good, the mounting options seems robust and easy to position, and mounting hardware is included! However at $950 from Filmtools + $300 for the converter it's in Alphatron territory. Also not sure if the converter has sdi loop-through.

Has anybody seen any other new options?

Any idea if this'd fit an Atomos Samurai?
I'd love an Alphatron, but I'd rather spend the $$$ on better glass for now and just hire the Alphatron till I can afford it.
After just doing a gig shooting the wine harvest in Blenheim in bright sunlight, an EVF was totally essential. Otherwise I had to make like an old skool photographer and pull my sweat shirt over my head and camera so I could set my focus and exposure before taking them back off and shooting blind.

The Grid seems great, but having magnets that close to your SSD slot would have me nervous.. Anyone use this run into any dropframe/corrupt files and/or drives?

No problems for me.

To my knowledge, magnets only affect an SSD if they are very strong and moved very fast back and forth across the memory.

Good experience with Alphatron. The best Evf on the market.
The service support changed me the lens with a new one with coating sun protection.
Now it's prefect. do not be afraid to expose it under the sun. can expose it for hours that nothing happens.

You mean a new lens? or a single shutter covering the lens

That Kinotechnik SDI-HDMI converter box looks great! In line mounting with current EVF hardware is exactly what we've all been waiting for! When will they release this to market? Can't find anything on it other than that video

I need advice on attaching the Grid Loupe to the BMCC. The adhesive that the mounting plate uses did not stick to the rubberized area around the screen. It seems that the magnets are much stronger than the adhesive.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions? The Grid Loupe does a good job...now only if it would stay on...

I didn't have a problem with mine. Are you using yours in hot weather? I had mine in Hawaii without trouble.

You could try some 3M mounting tape. I agree that the rubber part of the camera isn't a great surface to stick to, and the magnets on the VF are a little stronger than necessary. Perhaps a little tape over the magnets to weaken them would help.

I've been wondering what to get myself. The Munz looks like a good alternative until I decide, I just wonder if all that rubber will cause fogging in any way. I have a Zacuto VF (Not EVF) for my GH2s and until I got a chamois for it, I had issues with fogging if it was warm. No way to put a chamois on this.

Anyone have hands on experience with the Cineroid or Alphatron? I'd prefer sdi over any hdmi input.

I recently got the EVF 4 metal sdi.
HUGE issue, partly BM's fault due to lack of output options. In order to get 1080i, you have to be shooting 25p or 29.97. Otherwise, it's useless. My Ikan VX7 monitor does not have this problem. I'm pretty bummed.
