Nature/Outdoor LUT?

PostFri Feb 17, 2017 5:44 pm

Does anyone know of any LUTs designed for nature orientated or outdoor shooting with the 4.6k? I shoot primarily outdoor nature scenes, birds, animals etc. mostly with natural light. While the BM LUT is decent, I struggle grading with it applied in Resolve. A lot of times I find myself grading footage from scratch with no LUT. This is often not the easiest thing to do I'm finding and is very time consuming. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Comet Color Luts are made specifically for the 4.6k. Look up Comet Color Luts by Kholi on Facebook. They are great

Some landscape photographers put up some post processing tutorials on sites like YouTube and that sort of thing. There are some good ones on the ON1 Photo Raw blog, for example... the buttons and knobs are different, but the underlying techniques are the same.

In the end, since it's an artistic endeavor, you really should spend some time learning some color grading skills. Luts will only get you so far. Luts are like having someone hand you a fish, while learning to color grade is like learning how to catch fish. You don't even need to become an expert at it; that's one upside to landscape photography.

Hi Garth.

Give the two LUTs with download links below a try. One is based on ACES and the other is based on the Alexa REC709 LUT. They work much better for wide dynamic range scenes than BMD's own REC709 LUT. Both include a nice roll off of the highlights.
I personally only use them for monitoring, but they do work well inside Resolve. If learning to use Resolve and grading from scratch isn't an option for you and you instead use these for grading, make sure to place a node (or layer, if using layer based software) before and after the LUT. In the node before the LUT you can pull back any data that is outside its range (if any).

I recommend loading the LUT into your Ursa Mini 4.6K so that can expose using it. It won't be burned into the footage and it will help you expose so that you aren't too far over or under the exposure that the LUT is designed to process.

Thanks Jamie, I will load them up to my Small HD, 501 and give them a go. I have also been looking for a good LUT for landscape type shots.
Cheers

Thank you for flagging those. Just purchased them for testing. I'm getting some very lovely skin tones from Kholi's LUTs.

Cool. Probably easier though to just load them right into the 4.6K itself. That way you can expose properly using the LCD and/or the viewfinder. Kholi's LUTs (mentioned above) are also very much worth checking out.

Dumb question, how do I load additional LUTs onto my 4.6K?

Excellent. I'll give those a try. I've been using the BM LUT in camera to monitor my exposure and then applying it in Resolve after tweaking the footage. For the most part it's decent but can be problematic with low light. Thanks for the tips on the nodes as well. I'll post back when I try out those LUTs.

You must have firmware 4.x installed to do that.
Copy the LUT files onto your CFast2.0 card. Then in the camera LUT menu you can import the LUT.

Thanks Jamie, I would if I had a UM 4.6K. Was thinking of using the LUT with my BM Micro Cinema camera, hence the LUTs on the 501 when shooting, it (501) is the Viewfinder.

Sorry to report, but that is not how LUTs work. The LUTs I linked to were created for the log gamma and v3 film color space of the 4.6K as input. You can't feed in any other camera/sensor signal and expect a good result.

For a clear explanation of how LUTs work (and why a LUT for the 4.6K will not work on an input from a different sensor) see:

Does the LUT go away when if re-format the CFast 2.0 card in camera?

It will be wiped from the card, but up to six LUTs are permanently stored in the camera memory. Until you do a factory reset.

This is excellent. I just downloaded Jamie's LUT's and I'll give them a look in camera on a shoot I'm working tomorrow.

PS - Maybe I should try reading the user manual at some point, haha

A firmware update will also wipe the LUTs saved in camera and the presets. You can export your presets onto the CFast card.

Thanks, Robert. It's been a while since I updated the firmware! Hopefully one day the camera update program will be smart enough to manage the LUTs by storing the master LUTs on a computer and updating as needed.
