UM LANC cable replacement.

PostSat Feb 18, 2017 12:11 pm

Hi there,

I've found a few threads about this subject but no definite answer.

By mistake, I sent back the LANC cable coming with the shoulder kit to RMA.
Can I use any stereo 2.5mm jack cable to replace it?

Thanks.

Yes, I've seen that but everyone doesn't live in the USA.

Any authorized BMD dealer should have them or be able to order them anywhere. A stereo 2.5mm connection works. I use a 15 feet 2.5mm extension cable for my Ursa Mini.

Contact the BM Support office you sent the Shoulder kit to, and they should be able to just send you a replacement cable.

I've built a few of my own with a standard off-the-shelf 2.5mm TRS connector.

Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Guys, I know how to shop on the internet, but because of my current location I can't do it that way.

My question is: is there any tech spec for a LANC cable or would a 2.5mm stereo jack cable work?
I prefered to ask before trying but I don't see how it could damage the camera.

Tip is data bus, open collector, 9600 bps bidirectional, camera is master.
Ring is 5..8 volts power for the controller (7v for BMPCC), DIY controller needs some regulator.
Sleeve is ground.

I think a straight cable (tip to tip, ring to ring, sleeve to sleeve) is OK. And since the controller should survive the insertion when the tip momentarily contacts the ring contact of the socket then I believe that in worst case the crossed variant (tip to ring, ring to tip) simply wouldn't work.

Paranoiacs as myself could disassemble the controller and ensure that the ring comes to some kind of voltage regulator chip.
