What? Grant said it's available now! That in and of itself is a huge feat for BMB ;)

I think BMD have done well listening to customers over the last couple of years. Can't wait to hear some real world experiences of the new camera and Resolve control surfaces

Very interesting. One the one hand, awesome physical buttons, internal ND that they've formulated to work with their colour science... on the other, a smaller screen. I like the 4.6K screen as it is right now, very easy for me to get perfect focus. Hmm.

I guess I'll wait to hear from people about FPN and magenta and yada yada. Seems like a nice upgrade though.

Depends if there is an upgrade plan for 4.6 users? In the conference they only mentioned an upgrade plan for "the original ursa" owners. I just bought my 4.6 2 months ago. Painfull because these new feautures like ND and knobs for white balance and aperture and so much more control on the outside, are what I was missing.

If you only really a need PL mount, you have to pay the $2500 for PL turret, since the camera only comes with EF.

Ursa mini Pro - upgrade options

PostThu Mar 02, 2017 9:48 pm

Hi!

First of all congratilations for your new camera! The upgrades seems very consumer-friendly, llike you listened for our questions and wishes.

In the press video you mentioned upgrade. Can we get some info about that?

Sorry for not being patient, we bought our camera in november (after waiting for two years for it to ship) completed the accesories in february..... and now we see this truly amazing new version, with most of the upgrades we wanted, shipping.

I'm shocked... haven't decided yet if it's in a good way or a not.

I really hope there is a mutually beneficial solution soon!

Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for my english

I have started a petition to see how many folks want to Upgrade from the Mini to Pro. I sure could use those features!
https://www.change.org/p/blackmagic-...ni-pro-upgrade

As early adopters with the Ursa Mini 4.6K many of us suffered from various issues. Such as severe image quality issues ie: crosshatching, due to improper sensor calibration which also made it unsueable at ISO 1600 due to noise.

I feel as though it would be the right thing to do for Black Magic Design to offer early customers of the Ursa Mini an upgrade option.

Did the XLR pre-amps get upgraded in the Pro version? I rented an ursa mini before and had some issues with my NTG4 and couldn't get that great of audio, but was fine when feeding it a signal from my wireless lav pack. He mentions it briefly at 50:16
but kinda stumbles over it and just says it is improved with lower noise doesn't give to much detail...

A great iteration of the Ursa Mini 4.6K, for sure. And, really a replacement, in my opinion.

I'll be honest. Our recent 4.6K Mini purchase suddenly feels a little irrelevant now.

Agreed. Long term watchers of BMD's product announcements will have noted it pays to Wait a Bit before rushing in. Reading across the popular Fora this morning after the pre NAB live stream, it seems many loyal customers who've waited long and hard for their Ursa Mini have just seen 'the camera they've always wanted' is Now Shipping.

I have one of the very few OxygenTec ProPanels in the West ($700) and I love all 6Kg of it a heck of a lot but the added rotary pots on the BMD Micro Panel make it a very worthwhile investment. (even if the balls and wheels don't have the ergonomic & damped 'feel' of the bigger panels.)

On one hand I'm amazed what they came up with the Mini Pro, really listened to their customers. On the other hand I'm pretty pissed as I waited so long for my URSA Mini 4.6k and only 3 months later it became kind of obsolete. The Pro has all the features I would have liked to see from the start in the first Mini, and I could have saved now a 1000 Euros in IRND filters.

Anyway, Im getting amazing images from my Mini and the Pro is a great improvement. Well done Blackmagic team!
Looking forward how everyone who told us professionell cinema cameras don't have built in NDs will explain this now... ;-)

That's true.

However, the features gained with the Pro model (NDs, SD cards, tactile controls, mount change) are tremendous because of the versatility they offer across all styles of production. For example, we use our Ursa Mini 4.6K PL for commercials, and rent FS5's or Canon C300's for run-and-gun shoots internationally. With the Pro's added features, we'd have all our bases covered and wouldn't need to rent other cameras.

And for $500 (plus mount) more. Not bad. But a bummer; we had no idea this was coming.

Blackmagic design has done a great job! I think this one is really going to sell. I have 2 mini ursa's, one is 2 months old, and just invested in a new full IRND set of filters. That kinda sucks, but with tech you never know exactly what is around the corner..

If they are planning a upgrade offer, I will be in!

One missed opportunity I see with this awesome new design: simultaneously recording 4.6K RAW to the CFast 2.0 Cards and 1080 ProRes Proxies to the SD Cards. That would have been an amazing feature to have built-in.

I have a question regarding the announced Nikon lens mount. Will it accept an optical Focal Reducer? (aka Speed Booster) One reason I stick with Sony cameras is I can adapt my large and now very valuable collection of Zeiss Full Frame lenses to S-35 with a Focal Reducer to restore each lens' original Field of View.

In the case of the legendary Zeiss Distagon 21mm f/2.8 for example, a lens with a ninety degree Field of View and focus virtually from the front glass to infinity, I get a really useful and fast (f/1.9) hand held Prime on any Sony (mirrorless) camera so I wonder if the optional Ursa Mini Pro Nikon mount has the potential to take a focal reducer where the EF mount will not?

Simultaneous proxy recording to the SD with CinemaDNG files going to the CFast is a major omission. Is this truly not possible with the Ursa Mini Pro?

AFAIK the audio circuits have been majorly improved in the new camera. I am reviewing the camera for RedShark News, so should have it with me in the next few days.

This is amazing. I really wish you could do an upgrade from the current Ursa Mini. I recently sent my camera back to BM because I had a problem with FPN, so I'm getting a brand new one Monday. Really wish they could just keep it and I pay the difference... I'd rather not go through the trouble of selling it.

Very well said! Congrats to BM with the amazing new features. Great for people like me who would love to do EFP and docu style of filming with the 4.6k sensor. But also a very bitter pill for me because I just bought the old mini 4.6.
Indeed BM mentioned about an ugrade option in the conference video. But I think they said it was for "the original URSA" users.

+1 to this. And it should use the monitoring LUT on the proxies.

For all that Grant talked about workflow in the presentation, BMD still hasn't developed a raw workflow that comes close to the ease of the way r3d color metadata flows from camera to NLE to color. I'm not really a Red fan, but I do enjoy the easy workflows allowed by r3d

I'm in complete agreement here. I actually had my credit card out to buy the Ursa Mini Pro until I realized that, even with 4 media bays, it cannot record raw and proxy simultaneously (BM confirmed this with me on the phone). This is a huge omission, and the reason I'll be sticking with Red for now, despite my preference for not having cameras with skulls on them...

It's a physical switch to choose either CFast or SD, but I wonder if firmware might allow, at the very least, for recording of raw+proxy to one media type.
